Waterfowl, hawk flights and early passerines filled the past
two weeks - March 12 through March 26.
Waterfowl were highlighted by a brief appearance of a ROSS'S
GOOSE, March 22, on the Johnson Creek lake at Route 63 in
Lyndonville.
SNOW GEESE spilling into the region from the masses of SNOW
GEESE in Central New York, included over 5000 SNOW GEESE
along Stillwater Road in the Orleans County Town of Carlton.
Other SNOW GOOSE reports - flocks of 100 to 350 across
Niagara County, with small numbers of TUNDRA SWANS.
CACKLING GEESE - in groups of three to six reported in
Niagara County. In Chautauqua County, 7 CACKLING GEESE with
2 HORNED GREBES and a SANDHILL CRANE near the Center Road
cemetery in the Town of Sheridan.
March 13, viewed from he Erie Basin Marina in Buffalo, a
female KING EIDER, 23 RED-THROATED LOONS, 2 RED-NECKED
GREBES and a BLACK SCOTER at the Lake Erie iceboom. WHITE-
WINGED SCOTERS also along the upper Niagara River to Navy
Island. On the 16th, 125 RED-NECKED GREBES spread along the
Lake Ontario shore.
Opening waters at the Batavia Waste Water Plant, the
Iroquois Refuge and Tonawanda Creek flats south of Batavia,
host arriving marsh ducks species, plus CANVASBACK, REDHEAD,
LESSER SCAUP, COMMON GOLDENEYE, HOODED MERGANSER, COMMON
MERGANSER, RED-BR. MERGANSER and RUDDY DUCK. March 22,
lingering from winter, a BARROW'S GOLDENEYE still on Lake
Ontario at Point Breeze.
To date, the daily Hamburg Hawk Watch at Lakeside Cemetery,
on Camp Road in Hamburg, has recorded over 3700 TURKEY
VULTURES, plus 36 RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS, 259 RED-TAILED
HAWKS, and small numbers of ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, SHARP-SH.
HAWK, COOPER'S HAWK and AMERICAN KESTRELS. Also, back on
March 12, a COMMON RAVEN passed the watch. Visitors are
always welcome at the site.
Wide span of scarce NORTHERN SHRIKES - Town of Ellery in
Chautauqua County, Posson Road north of the Iroquois Refuge,
and Krull Park at Lake Ontario in Olcott.
Arriving passerines included 3 EASTERN MEADOWLARKS at Krull
Park, and at many locations, KILLDEER, NORTHERN FLICKER, and
large flocks of COMMON GRACKLES and RED-W. BLACKBIRDS.
At feeders - 60 COMMON REDPOLLS and a PURPLE FINCH in Wilson
by Lake Ontario, and 2 PINE SISKINS in Medina.
Other reports - 7 BLACK VULTURES roosting in the Village of
Lewiston. And, on the UB Main Street campus, PEREGRINE
FALCON at the nest box on the Winspear Avenue chimney.
