Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsI left USAA for boat insurance after 10 years because they're obviously
geared to smaller or trailerable boats and don't understand the bigger
boat market.
USAA writes two kind of insurance policies, BOAT insurance for smaller boats
and trailables, and YACHT insurance for larger boats. Perhaps you were dealing
with the wrong side of the house. I admit that their agents based in Texas
are not too knowledgeable about boat policies. Ask for a supervisor to direct
you to the right yacht agents.
I have found their insurance rates to be very reasonable, among the lowest I
was quoted, and their service and claims payout is excellent.

Well, I had "yacht" insurance and was dealing with their "yacht" agents
and did so for 10 plus years. I think the problem is that they only have
one underwriter, and as a consequence are not in a position to "shop"
your requirements around to various underwriters for the best deal for
your circumstances. They're very inflexible, as evidenced by the fact
that their coverage applies everywhere (no limitations as to areas,
dates, etc) and is based solely on the location where the boat is
normally docked. I specifically asked for coverage for a boat/yacht that
left Florida and the southern latitudes during the hurricane season
(June through November) and was told they don't write such a policy. Bye!!!
I don't have any complaints about USAA, generally, and have all of my
other insurance with them. Normally, their rates are on the low end and
their claim payments are exceptional (perhaps too easy, IMHO), but for
larger boats, I'd suggest looking elsewhere - don't just automatically
accept USAA as giving you the best deal.
