Staying connected while cruising

We've been using a Cradlepoint PHS300 router for the past 3-4 years to
provide a WiFi-based connection to the internet via and AT&T USB modem.
A recent upgrade to the modem has resulted in the inability to pair the
two devices, and the PHS300 is no longer supported by Cradlepoint. Too
bad, it was a great little router and also had a 3-4 hour battery which
made it truly portable.

We like the USB modem because it's small and when my wife attends
conferences/meetings it's easy to just plug into a USB port on her
laptop and make the internet connection via AT&T.

We like the router interface onboard Sanderling since it lets us connect
all of our wireless devices (computers and tablets) to the internet when
desired in the absence of a hot spot.

In searching for a replacement for the PHS300 I've not been able to find
anything as small and portable with the same functionality as the
PHS300. As close as it gets is a Pepwave SOTG unit, but it apparently
won't support our LG600 modem. The next best is a Cradlepoint MBR95
which does support the modem, but is much bigger and bulkier than the
PHS300 making it more difficult to place onboard.

Judy is going to check with AT&T to see what options exist other than
the current USB modem. MiFi looks good, but it is more bulky than she is
interested in carrying with her for meetings and conferences. That may
be a last resort, however.

Any suggestions for portable routers (will run on a 12 volt plug) that
accepts a USB modem?

I have a MIFI 5792 from AT&T and am sold to it. Runs at LTE Speeds, faster
than many wi-fi networks in hotels. And the battery gives me 6-8 hours of
full time connection. I can connect up to 10 devices.

Recharge can be done via my own laptop, a 12 volt plug or 120V standard.

Therefore I have a good connection, but no connection with AT&T other than
being a customer...

Just in case anyone has the same issues confronting them (USB modem from
AT&T and a no-longer-supported Cradlepoint PHS300 router) . . . .

We already had a 5 GB data plan with AT&T (used to be grandfathered into
an unlimited plan, but all that changed a couple of years ago) and were
using an LG AD600 USB modem that no longer worked with our Cradlepoint
router. We already have an Island Times WiFi setup using a Ubiquiti
radio for accessing WiFi hot spot connections, so didn't need to
duplicate that functionality.

Rather than buying another router into which the USB modem could be
plugged to give us an internet connection, we bought a new MiFi 5792
mobile hotspot from AT&T for $49.00 and saved about $175.00 over the
cost of the router (when you consider the need for a $25.00 12 volt
charger for the Cradlepoint). The mobile hotspot uses the same data plan
so there is no increased cost for that; it charges using a standard USB
to USB-micro cable connected to either a 110 volt wall wart or a 12 volt
USB plug-in (we also have hard-wired a couple of dual USB 12 volt
chargers from Blue Seas on Sanderling); can connect up to 10 devices;
and has a battery that is claimed to last about 11 hours after a
complete charge for fully mobile use.

It seems like the best of all possible worlds! No interface issues, get
a new one every 2 years to take advantage of new technology, etc.

Thanks for the suggestions from those who responded. All had some good
advice; this just fit our needs the best.
