Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsMorning,
I have a friend who is taking his sailboat up to Demopolis to have the
steel hull sandblasted. His mast height is 67 feet, can he get to Demopolis
without having to take the mast down? If not where is the best place to
crane the mast off & on his sailboat?
Thanks in advance,

You didn't say where your friend was departing from but I assume Mobile Bay.
Three locations to unstep the mast....Eastern Shore Marine, Turner Marine
and Dog River Marina.
It is 216 miles to Demopolis. Your friend will have to anchor out several
times. Having the mast up will interfere with getting into some of the
anchorages.
Regarding the fixed clearance of 52' on some of the bridges, that is at OHW
(Ordinary High Water). Check the Demopolis Yacht Basin website for current
info and to calculate bridge clearance. Then make sure your friend talks to
Fred. He may not want the mast up.
