Paul, someone previously suggested that the difference might be 25%.  Are
you expecting to loose that much efficiency i.e. use 25% more fuel while
trolling?

I suspect that the real number varies all over the place, according to which
two boats you are comparing; but that is probably a good ball park number
for a typical full displacement troller compared to a typical
semi-displacement cruiser.  It really does cost a whole lot of fuel to drag
a flat transom through the water, and the wider the boat the worse it gets.
I'm getting off pretty easy only because my main hull is so narrow, and
hence the flat transom area that I'm dragging through the water is much less.

Paul I believe the amount of draft at the transom also has an effect. Check
the underbody on Draggers and you will notice they sweep up to above the
water line at the transom.
