Dear colleagues and friends of the SSYCDS,
Hope this email finds you well. I'm sending this message on behalf of
Professor Hoyt Tillman. Please see below his announcement of a major
publication on Zhu Xi's writings.
Warm wishes,
Ya Zuo
Secretary, Society for Song, Yuan, and Conquest Dynasties Studies
I am writing to briefly introduce an exceptionally important
publication: Guo Qi郭齊and Yin Bo’s 尹波《朱熹文集編年評註》(Dating and commenting on
Zhu Xi’s Collected Works), 13 vols., published by the Fujian People’s
Press 福建人民出版社, in 2019; ISBN: 9787211082032. In addition to their own
research at Sichuan University, the dating of Zhu’s essays and poems
draws upon earlier research of various scholars, especially Chen Lai 陳來,
Shu Jingnan 束景南,and Gu Hongyi 顧宏義. Having struggled at the beginning of
my dissertation research around fifty years ago to date and sequence the
exchange of letters between Zhu Xi and Chen Liang, I have a special
appreciation for the work of such scholars to provide the best current
scholarship on dating of Zhu’s writings. In addition, Guo and Yin
provide endnotes briefly explaining difficult words, the source of their
selected character when there are variants in different editions, etc.
Although such annotations have limits and does not address all one might
like to know about a particular poem or letter, it is handy and resolves
some issues. In addition, the 13th volume contains appended materials,
including prefaces to editions of Zhu’s collected works by Chinese,
Korean, and Japanese scholars from the Southern Song era through the
early twentieth century, a finding list arranged alphabetically by first
character of the title, etc. For details and a scholarly evaluation by
the leading Zhu Xi philosopher in China, see Chen Lai’s review essay,
originally published in China Book Reviews 中國圖書評論, 12 (December 2020)
and available on-line since January 8, 2021 at
https://xw.qq.com/cmsid/20210108A00EUT00, accessed October 16, 2021. I
would add only a pre-publication notice of the Korean work, 朱子大全劄疑辑补,
which promises to enhance detailed understanding of Zhu Xi’s works;
Yuelu Academy Professor Yin Hui 殷慧and her team preparing this work by
Korean scholars for publication have already received a commitment from
the Zhonghua Book Company, and anticipate it will be available in
another two years.
