it's certainly more expensive under power,
but my wife will come with me on the trawler. She always flew places to meet
me when I sailed there.

Interesting comment and exactly my experience.  I come from a sailing background.  My wife hated sailing....she said "too wet, too cold, too tippy, too much work."  She came to the point that she would no longer accompany me.  As I grew older - and lazier - I came to agree with her.

I still love sailing so I had to find something that was a cross between sailboat and houseboat to please both of us.  A trawler has proven to be the perfect compromise.  I love trawlering, my wife loves it and we are a happy family once again.  I'm not saying that powerboating is better than sailing.  I'm just saying that for us, it works better.

With my miserly John Deere turbo diesel, I get about 5 nmpg per gallon at 7 to 7.5 knots, so fuel cost is not a significant portion of our cruising budget.  For example, I spend more each year on insurance than I do on fuel.  It will vary for those who have a different cruising lifestyle.

And by the way, I have a genoa that I hank on to the bow of our trawler on those nice days when the wind is just right.  I'm outside fiddling with the sail and my wife is in the pilothouse listening to SIRIUS radio.......and everything is right with the world.

An interesting piece on cruising styles and what you can do in a
fast, seaworthy boat -- California to Newfoundland in 40 days!
