The first time I stepped foot into a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) library was at Fisk Universityhttps://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&ved=2ahUKEwj4p6vE_-yEAxXxM1kFHdWiDM0QFnoECD8QAQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.fisk.edu%2F&usg=AOvVaw1992ejqN1Vt64CIwNcjKfQ&opi=89978449 in Nashville, Tennessee in 1994. As I walked across campus, I remember being nervous, feeling slightly out of place. Yet, the students on campus were incredibly kind, pointing me in the direction of the library and archives, where I would eventually conduct the archival research for my dissertation. Once I entered the library at Fisk, I felt immediately welcome. The head librarian and archivist went above and beyond to help me find what I needed to tell a story of African American leadership in the Jim Crow Southhttps://www.history.com/topics/early-20th-century-us/jim-crow-laws. Throughout the course of writing my dissertation, I visited the library at least 7 times and my respect for the staff and the collection continued to grow. The collection was beautifully and lovingly curated for students, faculty, and community. I had the opportunity to visit again a few months ago, and the library staff continues to educate about African American history and culture in interactive and unique ways.

Libraries are vitally important and fundamental to all of us. They provide us with the freedom to learn about anything we desire. In 2024, libraries have become controversial in some stateshttps://www.federaltimes.com/federal-oversight/2023/11/08/librarians-turn-to-eeoc-for-help-in-fight-over-book-bans/, facing legislation related to the banning of books on seemingly controversial or debated topics. Libraries at HBCUs are some of the most important institutions in the nation because they provide a window into African American history and culture, curated by African American librarians.
The HBCU Library Alliancehttps://hbculibraries.org/, an organization dedicated to the sustainability of HBCU libraries, aims to promote their relevance and ensure their future growth. The Alliance began as a call for action to strengthen library programs and address specific needs of HBCU libraries. In 2001, a group of librarians came together at the Southeastern Library Network (SOLINET) in Atlanta, GA with HBCU library directors Loretta Parhamhttps://www.auctr.edu/news-events/atlanta-university-center-library-ceo-director-loretta-parham-to-retire-this-year-2/, of the Atlanta University Center Woodruff Library https://www.auctr.edu/ (GA) and Janice Franklin, of Alabama State Universityhttps://www.alasu.edu/, to discuss creating an organization focused specifically on HBCU libraries. SOLINET provided underwriting for the initial meeting.

According to Parham, “I remember being so surprised, no shocked, that the library directors and deans of more than 100 HBCUs had never been brought together as a group, as a cohort, as a caucus. No one or no organization had convened this group of library leaders, not the American Library Associationhttps://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=American+Library+Association&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&dlnr=1&sei=jBHxZazqIYLn5NoPopCH6AE (ALA), not the Black Caucus of ALA and not any of the southern state’s library networks.” Additionally, she stated, “I was new to the HBCU world when I became library director at Hampton University. I had worked in public libraries for 19 years, all of my career until 1998 and I was eager to get together with other HBCU directors. Sharing what we know and what is learned on the job is a major aspect of professional development and leadership. I’m not one to sit idly by if I can see that there is something to do, and especially when it matters most for student success.”

The inaugural meeting of the Alliance was hosted in Atlanta, GA in October 2002. For the first time in history, 103 HBCUs were represented. The group drafted a mission and vision statement and began planning for the organization. According to co-founder Franklin, “Envisioning an Alliance of libraries committed to the mission of learning in HBCUs was inspired by my own love of our institutions that have sacrificed much to educate and lift our people above the hardships they have experienced throughout American history.”

Incorporated in 2006, today the Alliance is a consortium that supports the work of the information professionals at the libraries, archives, and special collections of the country’s HBCUs. According to the Executive Director Sandra Phoenixhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/sandra-phoenix-4a99a68/, “Since its founding, the HBCU Library Alliance has provided an array of resources and programs to transform and strengthen its member libraries by developing library leaders, preserving member collections and making them more accessible, and planning for the future.”
Over time, the Alliance staff has grown from one full-time Executive Director to 4 full-time staff members. The Andrew W. Mellon Foundationhttps://www.mellon.org/’s 2022 $1 million Change Capital grant award provided funding for an Executive Assistant, Program Manager and Development Officer. The Alliance is proud that all full-time staff members are HBCU graduates.
Currently, 90 HBCUs are members of the Alliance. More recently, the organization opened its membership, by invitation only, to non-HBCUs. Brown Universityhttps://www.brown.edu/ is the first invited non-HBCU affiliate member. Phoenix shared, “I see the Alliance boldly highlighting the significance and importance of HBCUs. I see the Alliance more boldly bringing the historical collections of our community to the broader academic community and engaging in partnership opportunities with mission-aligned organizations.”
The Alliance has significant goals as it moves forward. Phoenix shared, “Our ambitious plans include increasing the number of undergraduates who pursue librarianship, creating a master’s in Library and Information Science program, addressing gaps in technology on college campuses, and strengthening digitization capacity.” She added “We recognize the importance of equipping libraries with up-to-date technologies and digital resources to meet the evolving needs of students and faculty. Through strategic planning and resource allocation, we intend to improve technology infrastructure, expand access to online databases and digital collections, and enhance the digital literacy skills of library users.”
The Alliance is particularly important to HBCU libraries as they typically have fewer financial resources and are historically underfunded. The organization is committed to providing a platform for librarians from HBCUs to “collaborate, share resources, and network with each other.” According to co-founder Franklin, “The HBCU Library Alliance was founded to unite and empower the libraries at HBCUs that hold rich archives documenting rare stories of African American history and culture. Connecting our community of HBCU libraries through networking provides an opportunity for us to share these stories and to preserve legacies for future generations.”

She added, “This was my personal imperative at the inception of the Alliance. Today, more than ever, these unique collections have value and should be preserved at a time in our nation when “truth,” reality, and the teaching of African American history and culture are currently under assault. These unique treasures housed within the walls of HBCU libraries build a greater, more authentic, narrative for understanding and teaching the African American experience, worldwide. For this purpose, the Alliance has been an important milestone in the preservation of our cultural heritage.”

The head librarian and archivist went above and beyond to help me find what I needed to tell a story of African American leadership in the Jim Crow Southhttps://www.history.com/topics/early-20th-century-us/jim-crow-laws. Throughout the course of writing my dissertation, I visited the library at least 7 times and my respect for the staff and the collection continued to grow. The collection was beautifully and lovingly curated for students, faculty, and community. I had the opportunity to visit again a few months ago, and the library staff continues to educate about African American history and culture in interactive and unique ways.

Libraries are vitally important and fundamental to all of us. They provide us with the freedom to learn about anything we desire. In 2024, libraries have become controversial in some stateshttps://www.federaltimes.com/federal-oversight/2023/11/08/librarians-turn-to-eeoc-for-help-in-fight-over-book-bans/, facing legislation related to the banning of books on seemingly controversial or debated topics. Libraries at HBCUs are some of the most important institutions in the nation because they provide a window into African American history and culture, curated by African American librarians.

The HBCU Library Alliancehttps://hbculibraries.org/, an organization dedicated to the sustainability of HBCU libraries, aims to promote their relevance and ensure their future growth. The Alliance began as a call for action to strengthen library programs and address specific needs of HBCU libraries. In 2001, a group of librarians came together at the Southeastern Library Network (SOLINET) in Atlanta, GA with HBCU library directors Loretta Parhamhttps://www.auctr.edu/news-events/atlanta-university-center-library-ceo-director-loretta-parham-to-retire-this-year-2/, of the Atlanta University Center Woodruff Library https://www.auctr.edu/ (GA) and Janice Franklin, of Alabama State Universityhttps://www.alasu.edu/, to discuss creating an organization focused specifically on HBCU libraries. SOLINET provided underwriting for the initial meeting.

According to Parham, “I remember being so surprised, no shocked, that the library directors and deans of more than 100 HBCUs had never been brought together as a group, as a cohort, as a caucus. No one or no organization had convened this group of library leaders, not the American Library Associationhttps://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=American+Library+Association&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&dlnr=1&sei=jBHxZazqIYLn5NoPopCH6AE (ALA), not the Black Caucus of ALA and not any of the southern state’s library networks.” Additionally, she stated, “I was new to the HBCU world when I became library director at Hampton University. I had worked in public libraries for 19 years, all of my career until 1998 and I was eager to get together with other HBCU directors. Sharing what we know and what is learned on the job is a major aspect of professional development and leadership. I’m not one to sit idly by if I can see that there is something to do, and especially when it matters most for student success.”

The inaugural meeting of the Alliance was hosted in Atlanta, GA in October 2002. For the first time in history, 103 HBCUs were represented. The group drafted a mission and vision statement and began planning for the organization. According to co-founder Franklin, “Envisioning an Alliance of libraries committed to the mission of learning in HBCUs was inspired by my own love of our institutions that have sacrificed much to educate and lift our people above the hardships they have experienced throughout American history.”

Incorporated in 2006, today the Alliance is a consortium that supports the work of the information professionals at the libraries, archives, and special collections of the country’s HBCUs. According to the Executive Director Sandra Phoenixhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/sandra-phoenix-4a99a68/, “Since its founding, the HBCU Library Alliance has provided an array of resources and programs to transform and strengthen its member libraries by developing library leaders, preserving member collections and making them more accessible, and planning for the future.”

Over time, the Alliance staff has grown from one full-time Executive Director to 4 full-time staff members. The Andrew W. Mellon Foundationhttps://www.mellon.org/’s 2022 $1 million Change Capital grant award provided funding for an Executive Assistant, Program Manager and Development Officer. The Alliance is proud that all full-time staff members are HBCU graduates.

Currently, 90 HBCUs are members of the Alliance. More recently, the organization opened its membership, by invitation only, to non-HBCUs. Brown Universityhttps://www.brown.edu/ is the first invited non-HBCU affiliate member. Phoenix shared, “I see the Alliance boldly highlighting the significance and importance of HBCUs. I see the Alliance more boldly bringing the historical collections of our community to the broader academic community and engaging in partnership opportunities with mission-aligned organizations.”

The Alliance has significant goals as it moves forward. Phoenix shared, “Our ambitious plans include increasing the number of undergraduates who pursue librarianship, creating a master’s in Library and Information Science program, addressing gaps in technology on college campuses, and strengthening digitization capacity.” She added “We recognize the importance of equipping libraries with up-to-date technologies and digital resources to meet the evolving needs of students and faculty. Through strategic planning and resource allocation, we intend to improve technology infrastructure, expand access to online databases and digital collections, and enhance the digital literacy skills of library users.”

The Alliance is particularly important to HBCU libraries as they typically have fewer financial resources and are historically underfunded. The organization is committed to providing a platform for librarians from HBCUs to “collaborate, share resources, and network with each other.” According to co-founder Franklin, “The HBCU Library Alliance was founded to unite and empower the libraries at HBCUs that hold rich archives documenting rare stories of African American history and culture. Connecting our community of HBCU libraries through networking provides an opportunity for us to share these stories and to preserve legacies for future generations.”

She added, “This was my personal imperative at the inception of the Alliance. Today, more than ever, these unique collections have value and should be preserved at a time in our nation when “truth,” reality, and the teaching of African American history and culture are currently under assault.
