If you have already made a short local film or two, you likely know about
the Grand Cinema's 72-Hour Film Competition.  Whether you are experienced in
filmmaking or if you think you can make a film but haven't, here is your
chance.

For local filmmakers only (because you will have to be available April 30 at
the Grand), we are proud to bring back this competition for the 5th year.
Here is the concept:

  • Filmmakers gather at the Grand in Thursday, April 30.
  • Everyone is given a list of a few criteria that MUST be included in
every film.  Examples include a line of dialogue or a certain prop.
  • Each person or team then has 72 hours to script, shoot and edit a film
that is no longer than 5 minutes in length.
  • Films are due back at the Grand Cinema on Sunday evening, May 3.
  • Then on Friday, May 8 all the films are screened at the Rialto Theater
in downtown Tacoma.  Last year's event drew about 500 people!
  • Everyone has a lot of fun, from the filmmakers to the audience!

Each team's fee is $50.  For this you'll get 4 tickets to the event (tickets
are $12 each if you are not a member of the Grand Cinema) and a DVD of all
the films.  There is a limit of 30 teams and half the spots are already
filled so if you are interested, stop by the Grand Cinema soon!  Once we
reach 30 teams, that's it!

If you aren't a filmmaker but are interested in attending, tickets may be
purchased at the Grand or online at

Thanks for your support of the Grand.  *Oh, and come see the film **Moscow,
Belgium *which plays through April 16.  It was a New York Times' Critic's
pick
and is what the Grand is all about!  Showtimes are on our website:
