Literacy Leadership Awards 2017

Hello, all,

As of today we have received exactly zero nominations for this year's Literacy Leadership Awards. The deadline is still some weeks away (Sept 8), so we may yet receive some. However, if memory serves, last year we didn't receive any nominations except those provided by NCL board members. So, in the interest of moving things along, here are five ideas and related requests. I welcome your thoughts on these, and any other suggestions that you may have.

I do intend to keep the nomination process open until the announced deadline, and I plan to contact some Friends of the NCL directly to see what I can stir up. I just wanted to get the ball rolling.

Deborah

  1. Representative Rosa DeLauro (CT-03): Jeff has recently pointed out that Congresswoman DeLauro has been a champion for adult ed (and education generally) throughout her career. She is the Ranking Member on the House Labor, HHS, and Ed Appropriations committee. It would be good if we could find someone from CT to nominate her.

=> Tom, do you have any connections at the Conn AACE who might be interested in making this nomination?

  1. Senator Thad Cochran (MS): He has been a supporter of education, including postsecondary and adult ed, throughout his career. Both of his parents were teachers. You have to go back a ways in his record to find direct connections, but they're there, in bills that addressed digital literacy and research on reading. He is in his final term in the Senate (ending 2020), so it would be a nice gesture to recognize him. He's also the chair of the Approps Cmte, so raising awareness of adult literacy with his staff would be strategic. I've contacted a couple of friends who are connected with him, and will follow up on this one myself.

  2. Minnesota ATLAS (ABE Teaching and Learning Advancement System) (atlasabe.org): This organization is MN's provider of PD for ABE/ESL teachers. It's funded by the state Education Dep't and demonstrates what PD can look like when a sustained commitment is made. It provides a national model through its research and application of best practices, and it shares all of its materials (mostly for free) through its website.

=> Michele, would the MN ProLiteracy folks be interested in making this nomination?

  1. Steve Reder: He has done more to make the PIAAC data relevant to and usable by practitioners in the field than anybody, with the possible exception of Margaret Patterson.

=> Michele, since you and Peter and Kevin drew on his work in the white paper on ROI that ProLiteracy published earlier this year, would you three like to make this nomination? Perhaps David Rosen would like to join you.

  1. The Nat'l Institute on Drug Abuse (NIH): They have created easyread.drugabuse.gov, a website that provides super-accessible info on drugs, addiction, drug effects, and treatment. They worked with Academy of Hope, N Street Village, and Literacy Volunteers and Advocates (DC) to create the site.

=> Blaire and Heather, would the two of you be able to put this nomination together?

These are excellent ideas. I'd be happy to nominate ATLAS if Michele
prefers to focus on the other nomination since we have collaborated  w
ATLAS in various ways over the years and are just initiating a PD exchange
w them and our New England Literacy Resource Center. I have great respect
for the current and past staff that I know.
