Chuck & All,
Chuck, while you were asking about BW Velvet Drives, others may be interested
in knowing that Twin Disc 502 transmissions can also be freewheeled and do
not have a speed limitation, but must be lubed by running the engine every 8
hours, per the manual I have.

As extra insurance fill the gear with oil right to the top until it runs
out, so that the gears will be completely bathe in oil and are lubricated
as it spins.................

Cap'n Al:
I think there can be two different issues here. One is getting
lubrication to vital parts and overfilling, as a temporary expedient,
might accomplish this. The other issue is cooling of the transmission
lubricant and that would seem to depend on a pump on the input side of
the transmission. I have no idea how much heat would be generated in
this freewheel mode. It may well be a non-issue at the speeds to which
most of us are limited.

I have been told that the BW transmissions in Nauticat sailboats will get
noticeably hot to the touch after 10-12 hours of fast (for a sailboat)
freewheeling. I can say I was glad to get a feathering prop on my boat and
eliminate this source of noise and wear.

I have a groco water strainer in my boat. Its time to
replace the gaskets on it. West has them for 25.00 for
two pretty simple gaskets. Im wondering what the
ramifications of using form a gasket, like Permatex to
make the seal. Comments??

Dan,
Go to an auto parts store and purchase a sheet of gasket material similar
to what the Groco gasket is made of and cut your own.
In fact I keep 3 or 4 different types on brd at all times. Made a gasket
for the raw water pump last mo.
For $25 you can get enough material to make dozens of gaskets.
Another way is to place wax paper , two sheets, one on each surface of the
filter and then lay on a generous bead of silicon on one. Then allow a film
to set on the surface of the silicon . Gently set the second sheet of wax
paper on the top of the silicon and mate the two pieces but DON'T squeeze
them, just a little pressure to form the gasket will do.
After the silicon dries THOROUGHLY, tighten.
Then the next day remove the wax paper . Gasket is made. Been there done
that.
My experience.

I made gaskets out of an old tire tube for my strainers which I carry about
a foot of for other gaskets like heat xchanger end caps, and good chafing
wrap on wires and hoses.
