I got a little diesel in a fresh water tank -- I'm sure you can guess how
that could happen.

I cleaned with clorox bleach, with detergent, with vinegar, and of course
with many many gallons of water. My last step was to pour a gallon or two
of gin into a tank of water. As I read on some forum "a taste/smell will
persist for a long time, but you have some ability to choose which
taste/smell."

I was successful in eliminating the taint of diesel. I am not sure how much
the vinegar contributed.

Vinegar may not kill all of the microorganisms that can foul a boat fresh water system. Recommendations that I can find suggest a 50/50 vinegar solution(usual 5% solution) - quite a lot for a typical boat system.  Vinegar may also adversely affect the hot water heater anode.  Bleach/chlorine will kill everything.  Minimum concentration for this is 50 ppm.  For my 300+ gallon system I use 1 qt of bleach and allow it to work for 3h.Jelles.   Talulah KK44035 Sent from my Verizon, Samsung Galaxy smartphone

A word of caution with bleach in aluminum tanks... bleach will damage the
aluminum, though I have no idea of quantities or length of time. When we
used a bleach solution in our aluminium tanks, we didn't take too long to
pump the solution out, refilled and re-pumped out.
