A Big Thanks To ALL that helped
About a week ago I put out a plea to the list for help with a broken Volvo
TAMD61A.  For the 3rd time an intake vale had broken and destroyed 2
cylinders and pistons.  Well, here are the final results.
Thanks to list member Dennis Diehl who took time to go to a Volvo location
near him I finally got in touch with a mechanic that KNOWS and cares.  He
also taught Volvo heavy engine repair at Volvo for 5 years.  His name is Hans
Wahl at French Creek Marina in Clayton, NY, just at the entrance to the St.
Lawrence.  I drove the removed broken head with valves to him thinking the
head could be repaired. NOT, but he quickly found out that the intake valves
were the wrong part and were truck engine parts not marine engine parts.
These are 1988 engines and there was a service bulletin out on these engines
in 1992 stating that fact.  So once again the new head and valves and sleeves
and pistons are going in the engine, But This time we will look at both
engines and all the parts and get it fixed correctly.
On additional note it seems that as a routine maintenance of about 1500
hours the engine needs to be " de-carboninzed ".  According to Hans the
exhaust valve has a small ridge on it that breaks up carbon deposits on the
valve seat and that ridge wears down and the valve need to be replaced.  So
Volvo owners take heed.  See our website if you want to look at the bad block.

You may wish to get the serial numbers on your engines and call Volvo to see
if any service Bulletins against have been issued your engines.

Now for the tricky part. The boat was in the Hudson at Tarrytown, NY and

the mechanic in Clayton, NY.  So with only the starboard engine we came up
the Hudson thru the eastern part of the Erie Canal, up the Oswego canal, and
across Lake Ontario.  31 locks and 340 miles in 4 days.  Once the lockmasters
learned of our problem they would phone ahead and we always got the port wall
and that helped getting into and out of the lock.  Leaving Oswego at 6 am the
lake was like a mill pond and the sun shone.  3 hours after getting to
Clayton the low pressure got here and there were 4 to 5 footers out there.
The boating gods must have taken pity on us.
Tips and fuel prices.
If you can find one get a copy of Boating on the Hudson May 2001 It lists all
the fuel stops on the Hudson.

At Stony Point about 30 miles north of NYC NY is Panco Oil Co. we didn't
stop, but I think fuel should be cheap call 845-429-9120, easy to see on west
side of river.

On the Hudson we found a free restaurant dock in the town of Catskill.  It is
just as you enter the creek on the starboard side at a restaurant called the
Point.  You sort of should eat there and the food was good.

Fuel at the town of Coyemans was about the cheapest we found at the Coeymans
Landing Marina for $1.50 and nice folks( be carefull here, there is a rock
island between the gas dock and the river,  Approach from the extreme south
and follow the private markers.  We found 3' under the boat on the way to the
fuel dock.

There might be a fuel dock right on the river just past the creek at Catskill
cheaper ( Kosco ) but it was not open when we came thru.

The next place we found cheap fuel was at Brewerton at the West end of Lake
Oneida Lake at theWinter Harbor Marina for $1.36 Boat US price, but they
don't even ask for you card number.  Skipper Bob recommonds Ess-Kay Yards
here.  We didn't see any signs and didn't call.

In Oswego there is a town wall dock on the starboard just after the last lock
that asks you to put $15 in an envelope and put it in a lock box.  Decent
restaurant called the PressBox behind motel at this location.

Again thanks to all who offered advice and here is a list of Volvo phone

numbers that I accumulated.

Mike xxxxxxx (rapid response Volvo) on Long Island Sound 516-924-1010 I
called and he tried to help.

Dave Waits (in the UK)  I didn't call  44-019-23-691175

Drew ( at Volvo in Cheasepeak in VA. I think)  I didn't call But I think he
was contacted by Hans.  757-436-2800 ext 4713

Volvo 800 I didn't call  800-525-5508

Comments on previous topics on the list.

Oil:  Hans says he uses only Ams Oil synthetic in his engines.

I also asked about using special diesel antifreeze in the closed water system
and he was in complete agreement with that fact.  He also said add another
additive to the coolant to get proper PH balance.
