I'm looking for an amplified wifi antenna to install under the flying bridge
brow. I have heard some amazing claims as far as range goes. ANy real life
recommendations?

There have been a number of discussions here that you might find in the
search.

We have a NanoStation Loco 2 from www.ubnt.com and it works very well.  Cost
is around $50.00.

Run, don't walk to:

http://mysite.verizon.net/vzeovrht/wifiantennaeasy/

And, before somebody comments, "yes, indeed," these guys are a sponsor of the
Salty Southeast Cruisers' Net, BUT that is not why I'm recommending them so
highly.

WiFi Antenna Easy has simply built a better mouse trap. Most external Wi-Fi
antennas plug into a USB port, and that simply does not work. Inevitably, you
have conflicts with the laptop's onboard Wi-Fi pick-up system.

WiFi Antenna Easy's systems plug into an ethernet port, or, actually, the vast
majority of their systems ship with their own router. Then, a simply ethernet
cable connects the router to your laptop, and it's off to the races.

At the Salty Southeast Crusiers' Net, we've experimented with these systems,
and using their top line model, it's possible to even stream video an
incredible distance from a good Wi-Fi source.

In short, we can recommend these people too highly. Give them a good look!!!!

Sam:

One thing I learned the hard way is that there is huge signal loss with
an antenna that is not attached directly to the transmitter/receiver.
The Nano and the Bullet are directly connected to their antenna and work
well. I went with a bridge and a 6 foot cable to a tall Digital Antenna
but the cable run loss makes the set up performs poorly.

We just installed the WIFI system from http://www.islandtimepc.com and it
works great!...  it uses the UBNT Bullet 2HP bridge and an external LAN
cable for connection... no signal loss...  before installation my WIFI
adapters were picking up 4 access points.... afterwards I am now seeing 25
access points for WIFI... we installed using a wireless router and now have
a complete wireless network from anywhere on the boat.

No affiliation with Island Time PC just a happy customer.
