Local canvas guy is recommending Stamoid for my tuna tower tops. There will
be a buggy top on the top of the tower & a full top over my helm area, all
over the aluminum pipe work. The old was weblon & after 22 years has finally
fallen apart. How good is Stamoid & what type of life can I expect from it?

In Florida I have had to replace Stamoid on my fly bridge and lower deck bimani every 4 years. Also seams where sewed tend to stretch out and leak. Orther than that no complaints.

Andy, one thing about Weblon is that it is laminated on both sides with vinyl, whereas Stamoid is just pokyester fabric coated with vinyl.
The difference comes in fabrication. Weblon can be glued together, instead of sewn, using an adhesive like HH-66. HH-66 melts the two pieces of material together and results in a bond that is stronger than the material.
Eliminate the stitching eliminates a potential leaky seam. Even if the Weblon is oversewn after being glued, if it starts to leak, HH-66 can be applied and will probably seal the leaks. Kinda handy if the seam is over your head.
Stamoid, at least to my understanding, can also be glued together with HH-66, but the seam isn't as strong as with Weblon. I haven't worked much with Stamoid, so better discuss this with your canvas guy.

Andy,
My bimini is white Stamoid, about 6 years old. The boat is on the southern
Chesapeake Bay. My experience has been that the material is difficult to
handle (doesn't fold easily when removed for cleaning) and the coating
cracks after a period of time. Working with it in cool weather is almost
impossible. Finally, it has never cleaned up to my satisfaction....the white
always looks dirty. I will not use the product in the future.

For best results consider heat welded seams rather than sewing for Weblon or
Stamoid.
