After all the work I am doing, I want to include at least a little bit that
you can actually SEE!  I came across this info in an old user group.
Anybody have an opinion/update?

And then this (info would not paste):
http://www.boatersreport.com/Boat%20Polish/carna
uba_chart_overall_score.htm

Thanks, Jim

The following results are from Practical Sailor, a magazine that is
continuously testing boating products...mostly sailboat related.  A total  of 28
waxes/polishes were tested, the following were mentioned as  indicated...note
the comment on polyglow:

From Practical Sailor, November 15, 2004:

Best:  Collinite #885

2nd:  Meguiar's Mirror Glaze

3rd:  3M Ultra Performance

Others rated as 'good':

Turtle Wax 2000

Boat Life Wax

Star Bright Presoftened

Star Bright Polish with Teflon

West Marine Carnauba

NOTE:  All the above are paste waxes.

Two non paste waxes did well:

Poly Glow Liquid and WM Teflon Boat Polish...many users liked these
products because they are easy to put on and have a good initial shine, however,
PS noted that some liquid plastics discolor and deteriorate and are hard to
remove.  PS prefers a good paste wax, which can be removed fairly easily in
order to apply a new coating.

I have used Collinite 885 Fleetwax for years.  I'm very happy with its
durability and shine.  My boat gets a coat of wax every spring and that
lasts all year long.  It is not an easy product to work with, but the
results speak for themselves in my opinion.

Did you notice that the winner in every single category was the Heller Glanz
product? Looks pretty fishy to me.

That and I've used the Fleetwax paste for years with excellent results. I
started using it after Practical Sailor and their now defunct sister
publication Powerboat Reports tested lots of waxes and it always came out on
top.

Is it possible that the reason is Heller Glanz products are the best?  I
have no idea, but sometimes things are rated the best simply because they
are. And there is nothing fishy about it?

Jim,
If you play with this comparison chart a little you will see that it
has been put up by Heller Glanz.  If you click on their name in the left
column of the chart you will be taken to their website. Clicking on any of
the other product names will take you into outer space.

Very doubtful. With all the products out there, what are the chances that
yours wins best in every single category, including insect spray? The domain
was registered through GoDaddy.com as well, so you can't really track the
ownership through whois. My bet is that Heller Glanz set up that web site
themselves.

It also looks strange that Fleetwax paste, which consistently proved the
best at Practical Sailor is near the bottom of these rankings, even lower
than products I know personally to be worthless.

The website /www.boatersreport.com is registered to David Kern at 439
South 46th Street Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19143. This is a private home.

Also  at this address is  DAK Marine and Specifica Marine Waxes
featuring  Heller Glanz  products.  Their website is

Also at the same address is a Genital Wart Treatment and other great
products at www.skinchoice.com

Another site claims that Skin Choice owns 139 websites.  Interesting
marketing concept.

Is this a great country or what!!!

Wow! Do NOT mess with Frank! I knew it was phony, but, "That's put paid to
it!" However, if your boat's bottom has genital warts, I think we are on to
something.

I can attest to Fleetwax and its durability as well. I used to wax
boats as a side job in high school and college. Two boats a day with
my best buddy, usually by hand (ahh, to be young again. Good times,
great tan, plenty of beer $$, and really strong shoulders.) Anyway,
the following recommendation is about 11 years old (I am 33 now and
haven't waxed a boat since college), but in our 7 years in business we
found that a first run using a product called Gary's Satin (red and
yellow can, easy to use, an excellent "cleaner" wax that would get rid
of most marks and dull spots) followed by a second run with fleetwax
(for an extremely durable shine & protecting coat (a hard wax that is
a pain in the tush to use, but much easier to apply after Gary's got
rid of all the tough spots).  This combo probably arose out of
necessity - fleetwax was a pain to use by hand, but we were too cheap
and too afraid to buy/use a wheel on someone else's gel coat, so
Gary's + Fleetwax was our MO. Yes, we would wax the boat twice in a
row - two coats.  This combo always got us great results, and almost
all of our customers were repeat customers. Rare was the boat that
actually needed to be compounded - Gary's was our favorite product
because it was seemingly able to get anything out and bring back the
dullest hulls (just be really careful on a colored hull - use lots of
wax, rub very lightly). The smell of it still makes me think of summer

  • excuse me, I think I have a can in the garage . . .

Our boat is almost 20years old.  Probably compounded by PO's??  but a good
finish.

We have only used NuFinish the last 4 years, a polymer as our finishing
product up until this year.  This year we compounded only the flat v-berth
and aft cabin  areas, then again used NuFinish.  That kicked up those areas
a notch.

We get a lot of compliments on the finish.  NuFinish once a year, also great
for touching up the black streaking.

True, it's mainly a freshwater boat and good original finish helps, but
that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

It's now getting the saltwater and sun test in Florida....
