Tom,

Ah, now I see. Thanks.

Here's how I understand this. A candidate needs to be ONE of the following:

  • The current NCL Representative from a Full Member (voting member) organization (remember that the Representative is simply the person who is the main point of contact for the organization; for example, I was the Representative for the Center for Applied Linguistics before I was elected to the Board, and I have continued in that role since my election to the Board); OR

  • Another professional from a Full Member (voting member) organization; OR

  • A professional from an Associate Member organization or a Friend category member. This person must have attended the spring and fall Membership meetings regularly for at least a year.

I hope that helps!

Deborah

Hello All,
Sorry. I thought I had cut and pasted it into the previous email. We are looking at the requirement of "attending meetings" especially.
Thanks,
Tom

*Section 3.02 Number of Directors; Qualifications

To be eligible to serve as a director, candidates must be and continue to be either a member's NCL Representative or another professional from the voting member organization, provided, however, that of the three directors to be elected each year, one such member of the Board need not meet these eligibility criteria but must have been a member in another category and have attended meetings regularly for a minimum of one year prior in order to be eligible to serve.

Good morning, Tom,

Thanks for your query. I have to confess that I'm not sure what you are asking. You request a comment on "the bylaw below," but I don't see the bylaw that you are referencing. Can you clarify, please?

Thanks!

Deborah

Hi Silja and Deborah,
Can you please comment on the bylaw below?
We are trying to understand NCL's structure and nomination/election process.
I am also looking to respond to an email from Peter and address some misunderstandings he has noted about COABE.
Thanks,
Tom

Subject: [NCL Members] invitation for NCL Board nominations

Dear NCL Colleagues,
The Board of the National Coalition for Literacy is soliciting nominations for candidates to fill three Board vacancies for the term beginning on October 1, 2016. NCL Board members serve three-year terms, and no Board member may serve more than two consecutive terms. This is a volunteer, working Board with no staff.

Candidates need to be:

  • From an NCL full member organization in good standing (having paid the 2016 membership dues)
  • Committed to advancing adult literacy and education through advocacy and related activities
  • Able to participate in NCL's work and bimonthly Board meetings; two of these are in-person meetings held in Washington, DC (travel at the Board member's own expense), and the rest are held via conference call
  • Interested in collegial sharing with other national organizations concerned with adult education and able to work collaboratively

For more information about the NCL, visit national-coalition-literacy.orghttp://national-coalition-literacy.org/

Interested candidates should submit their resume and a cover letter to the NCL Nominating Committee c/o Deborah Kennedy atdeborah.r.kennedy@verizon.net<mailto:deborah.r.kennedy@verizon.netmailto:atdeborah.r.kennedy@verizon.net%3cmailto:deborah.r.kennedy@verizon.net> by August 1, 2016. The Nominating Committee will interview finalists by phone and present a slate for the Board's review and approval in September. The Board will then submit the slate to the NCL membership for a vote, after which all candidates will be informed of the outcome.

Thank you in advance for your support of the National Coalition for Literacy!

Cordially,

Silja Kallenbach and Deborah Kennedy
