Dave,

It use to be fairly easy to decipher Cummins engine models, but is much harder now.  Before the 6BT5.9 or 6BTA5.9 were 6 cylinder 5.9 liter engines with either a turbo or turbo and after cooler.  The easy way now is to download this product catalog: http://marine.cummins.com/attachments/public/marine/Products/Literature/3381946.pdf .

FWIW, Cummins is probably one of the better power plants for anything less than 400 or so HP.  They are one of the easiest to maintain for user maintenance items like impeller replacement.  Also, they are one of the few marine engines serviced directly by the manufacture.  I've owned Cummins, Yanmar, John Deere and Volvo powered boats.  They are all good products, I just am partial to the Cummins 6BT5.9s that powered 2 of my past boats.  Of course with all the electronics hung off of today's engines I'm not sure what may have changed with Cummins Q series.
