The White-tailed Kite continues (day 27) in Stratford.  Details on
CTBirds.  However so much more is happening that birders might be
paying attention elsewhere this weekend.  Also, with the fine
migration weather the kite just might decide to move on.  If you have
been putting off seeing this bird you might want to get moving before
it does!

From Paul Cianfaglione and Tom Sayers:
08/27/10 - Rocky Hill, Rocky Hill Meadows -- 1 BAIRD'S SANDPIPER. Bird
flew in to the area of recently cut sod.  As it circled the area, it's
flight call was heard. I told Tom that this must be a Pectoral
Sandpiper trying to land, but it was the Baird's. Sibley's Guide
mentions the Baird's Sandpiper flight call as a rough kreep;
reminiscent of a Pectoral Sandpiper.

From Sara Zagorski:
08/27/10 - Rocky Hill, Rocky Hill Meadows -- Baird's Sandpiper hanging
out at the big puddle on the main dirt road, near where all the trucks
are working.

From Alex Burdo and James Orrico:
08/27/10 - Rocky Hill, Rocky Hill Meadows -- aprox. 2:30-4:45, Baird's
Sandpiper in a field adjacent to the large puddle, past the 3-4 trees.

From Dave Provencher:
08/27/10 - Groton, Bluff Point -- Very nice movement of birds through
here, 2,000+ warblers is admittedly rather conservative.  This
included Tennessee Warbler (1); Oporonis species (3 seen in flight
going away. One likely CT and one likely Mourning, but I'm not
calling; Wilson's Warbler (2), Hooded Warbler (1), Bobolink (10+).
Editor's Note: Catch the right morning (see Dave's posts on CTBirds
about doing that) and this spot can be amazing... and incredibly
frustrating for even the most advanced birders.  But even for the rank
and file like myself it can still be great fun.

From Wayne Meagher via Paul Carrier:
08/27/10 - Colebrook, Colebrook reservoir -- over 14 species of
warblers, OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER.

From Paul Carrier:
08/27/10 - New Hartford, West Hill Rd -- On left near the top are a
line of tall Spruce trees, a CAPE-MAY WARBLER.
New Hartford, Stub Hollow Rd -- 1 Stub Hollow Rd on right in wet area
just off Rd by stream.

From Brendan Murtha:
08/27/10 - Greenwich, Greenwich Point -- about 11:00, one WHITE RUMPED
SANDPIPER.

From Jay Kaplan and Bill Asteriades:
08/27/10 - Milford, Milford Point -- 1 WESTERN SANDPIPER.

From Judy Moore:
08/27/10 - Woodbridge yard -- Six Common Nighthawks heading SW at 6:45
PM.

From Paul Desjardins:
08/26/10 - Rocky Hill, Rocky Hill Meadows -- morning, a Baird's
Sandpiper feeding in the area where they are removing turf.

From Paul Carrier:
08/26/10 - Bakersville, Bakersville swamp -- 1 Yellow-bellied
Flycatcher.

From Greg Hanisek:
08/26/10 - Middlebury, Sperry Pond -- 1 OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, 1
flyby COMMON NIGHTHAWK.

From Jayne Amico:
08/26/10 - Meriden -- Several hundred COMMON NIGHTHAWKS.

From Brenda Inskeep:
08/26/10 - Stamford, Cove Island Park, sanctuary -- starting at 6:45
pm, at least 20 in all flying over and towards Wallack's Point where I
could see them at a distance feeding for a while before they moved on.

From Carol & Gary Lemmon:
08/26/10 - Branford yard -- late afternoon, several Common Nighthawks
flying over our yard.  Could not get an accurate count, too many trees
in the way.

From Tony Hager:
08/26/10 - Chester/Haddam town line, Rt 154 -- imm. Northern Goshawk
sitting on wire.

From Chris Loscalzo:
08/26/10 - Westbrook/Clinton border, in the Menunketesuck River Marsh

  • 18 LITTLE BLUE HERONS: 9 adults, 8 juveniles, and one mottled second
    year bird.

From Frank Mantlik:
08/25/10 - Fairfield, along I-95 -- 5:45 pm, 30+ Common Nighthawks,
with most near Exits 20-22, especially over the pond on Mill River.
Very localized, as I saw none anywhere else during my ride home.

From Sean, Brendan, and Graham Murtha:
08/25/10 - Westport, Sherwood Island State Park --  6-7 pm,  at least
20 Common Nighthawks.  Also Peregrine Falcon.
Westport, Grace Salmon Park -- just after dark, 1 Yellow-crowned
Night-Heron.

From Brian Hiller:
08/25/10 - Bolton(?), Bolton Notch -- between 7:20 and 8:00, a group
of nighthawks was working the currents over Bolton Notch, near where
I-384 begins at Rte 6.  A lone individual started at 7:20pm and was
eventually joined by more than 30 others.  This is the first "big"
group of nighthawks I've seen but I expect to see larger flocks in the
next week or so.  Last year during this week there were more than 200
over Silver Lane and I-384 in Manchester.
