I vote for CAPN. I have it wired to a Garmin GPSMap162 (bought before I got
CAPN) and an Autohelm ST7000 autopilot. The GPS did require a software
upgrade from Garmin's website to allow routes to be uploaded from CAPN. The
1990 vintage autopilot also required a software upgrade for $35 plus freight
from Raymarine's shop in New Hampshire. My impression is that CAPN is
designed by mariners whereas some others seem to be designed by computer
people; I prefer the former. And, if it's good enough for the Naval Academy,
it's good enough for me.

You are absolutely correct.  Dennis Mills is a boater  first and foremost.
He has mastered all the courses offered by the US Power Squadrons, holds a commercial Captain's ticket and  has  many miles of water under the keel.

The two guys who started Nobeltec  are also boaters but  they came from Microsoft and their thinking was already contaminated by  "computer think" before they
got involved in yachting as a week-end activity.
The other companies were created by business people  looking for a means to make money by  cashing in on a new technology trend.
CAPN
How do I know, because I have been  researching and  testing  the stuff since 1994.  I even have software that never made it to the market place.

Here's a story on responsiveness.  I sent an e-mail to CAPN technical
support identifying a minor bug and suggesting that the default
calculations of time/speed/distance for routing be user defined rather
than calculated in knots.  My argument was many of us routinely use the
ICW and even though it pains us to switch to statute miles, discretion
is the better part of valor.

Three days later Dennis said the fix had already been made to the bug
and he agreed to my recommendation and made knots or stature miles
optional as selected by preferences.

A day later, a new Mosaic CD arrived version 7.3.3

You don't get that kind of responsiveness out of Microsoft!  Color me a
CAPN fan!
