TWL: Lehman expansion tanks

American Diesel makes a replacement neck for the stock expansion tank used
on the Ford Lehman 120 engine.  This new neck is a little longer and
accomodates an overflow/return bottle similar to the system on a car.
American Diesel told me that replacing the stock neck with the new one, and
its associated cap, solves several annoying problems, like coolant spitting
out the overflow pipe.  I was told that the replacement is a matter of
cutting the original neck in a couple of places and then simply "prying" it
off the expansion tank, as it's simply epoxied in place.  The new neck is
epoxied in place as well.  The entire process was described to me as being
very easy, but I'm curious if anyone on this list has done this replacement
process themselves, and if it is in fact, an easy thing to do.  Thanks.

(SNIP) The entire process was described to me as being very easy, but
I'm curious if anyone on this list has done this replacement process
themselves, and if it is in fact, an easy thing to do.

I put the new necks on both of my Lehmans a few years ago and bought the
overflow bottle kits.  Easy install, and works like a charm!  All I have
to do to check coolant is pull the hatch cover and see if the plastic
hose to the neck is "green".

                               Regards.....

I did a temporary fix on my Lehmans about the problem of the spitting of the
coolant. I just drilled a hole in the lid of a small
Gatoraid (12 oz?) bottle & stuck the overflow tube in it. Every so often, I
just dump the contents back into the tank. It seems to always bring it right
back up to full, so I'm not losing any fluid. I have wondered if there is
some reason you can't just replace the cap & install an overflow/return tank
without replacing the neck? Do you even have to replace the cap?

My dock neighbor, Jim Monahan of the list, did replace the neck on one of
his expansion tanks. I don't remember why. He said it wasn't a big deal.
Maybe he'll chime in.
