Used boat survey

I am hoping to buy a used trawler in the next year or two and have questions
about what to expect from a survey.  I didn't have the 26' Chris Craft that
I currently own surveyed.  If I find a boat that is a long distance from
where I live could I contact a surveyor in the area where the boat is and
have a preliminary survey done to see if the boat is worth me making the
trip to look at the boat.

I will probably be buying a 20 year boat and one of my biggest concerns is
rotten coring either in the deck, transom or stringers.  Do surveyors ever
drill a hole into a stringer or transom to get a sample of the material
inside.

Is there a website that would be good to look at to get more information on
what to expect from a survey.

You sure can. In my case 5 years ago when I bought my boat I found Surveyors
in 3 states that did a "drive by" survey, meaning they walked around the
boat, went inside in some cases, spending a half hour to an hour and just
called me back and said this boat is junk, or this one is worth looking at.
I paid them from nothing to about $50 for this service. The boat I bought
was done this way and the surveyor didn't charge for the service, just said
to keep him in mind if I decided to proceed with the purchase. I did and
ended up using him.

As for drilling holes, even in a full survey, they usually draw the line
with any "destructive testing", like drilling holes. (Although I saw a
surveyor beat holes with a balpeen hammer all in the transom and back deck
of a boat during a friends survey. If that had been my boat, I would have
thrown a fit. My friend didn't buy, and never heard anything about all the
holes)
