Our boat is used by several members of family.  Ais is very useful for finding out where the boat is on Marine traffic.  I suppose if someone stole the boat one might be able to find it that way also

If interested just for notification purposes, a much cheaper and just as
reliable (as far as a family "notification" device is concerned) is to
simply use the OnCourse app on a cell phone. It sends location data to
MarineTraffic.com via cell phone with extremely low data usage. We have
used it in the past in addition to the AIS when we're in areas (like
parts of the ICW and certainly the inland rivers) with virtually no
MT.com receiver coverage; the app does not interfere with or in any way
duplicate the data received by MT.com via a standard receiver which then
transmits the data to the MT.com online site.
