Preventing mildew in bimini

Now that we have had our first rain in Northern California, I would like to
prevent the mildew that occured last year in my softtop bimini canvas
enclosure
in my Mainship Pilot 30.

It is difficult to leave anything open without rain getting in.

It's my understanding that mildew does not grow because the item is wet,
it's the dirt on the item that allows mildew to grow. So, I'd guess that
the answer is to keep the bimini clean. On our boat, we're amazed at how
dirty the underside of the open pilot house roof gets. If Jill keeps the
underside of our roof, over our open pilot house, clean, we never get
mildew. But once it gets dirty, then we start seeing mildew form.
Cleaning the underside of our pilot house roof is one of Jill's weekly
chores, but due to all of the whining, I do let her slide, mostly because
she seems waits until I'm driving to wash it down.

Rudy and all,
We solved the mildew problem on our old sailboat by going to the paint
store (Gliddens) and bought a gallon of pain and had them add mildicide
to it - double dose. The overhead was just fiberglass so we used white
gloss paint and never had a speck of mildew after we applied it.

Wayne, adding a mildewcide to the paint, belongs in one of those, "why
didn't I think of that" categories. If Jill ever gets around to repainting,
I'll suggest it to her. Thanks.
