Dear Colleagues,
As you may know, two China specialists in my department (Susan Mann
and Don Price) are retiring at the end of the current academic year. Due
to the California budget crisis, we were not able to search for a
replacement this year, which leaves our program in desperate need of
faculty for next year. We hope, pending budget approval, to be able to
hire someone to teach a few courses (probably the China survey, one or
two upper division classes on the 20th century, and/or possibly a lower
division world history class). My chair seems to think it might be
possible that someone on sabbatical would be interested in such a
position, with the idea that the teaching could supplement sabbatical
pay. We do have a very good library (with access to the electronic Siku,
CAJ (Chinese Academic Journals), and other such resources) as well as
very easy access to Berkeley's collection. I am writing here in an
attempt to determine whether a part-time stint at Davis would hold any
appeal for someone on sabbatical. If you think you might interested, or
know of someone else who might be, could you let me know? I should
stress again that all of this is contingent on budget approval, etc.,
etc., but we should have clearer information by the end of February.
Best, Beverly
