Brightside Paint

Interlux has always told me to not use Penetrol in Brightside paint; their reason is that though it will thin the paint, the Penetrol will not allow the paint to fully cure. Being a solvent based paint, their brushing thinner for Brightside is 3333, primarily kerosene and naptha. I called their tech dept today and confirmed that my memory still serves me.

There was a post that mentioned that their use of Penetrol in Brightside with good results. I'd like to hear more from others that have done so and about their results. Maybe real-life results are good enough and the more perfect results that can be obtained in the lab are unnessesary?

By the way, I didn't know, as I've never used Brightside Boottop, but it is the same paint as is Brightside; absolutely no difference in the paint's formula- per Interlux. The only difference is in the packaging- they took their 4 most popular colors and packaged them in pint cans. Geez. the minutae that can still be learned!

Well that's a surprise.  The Interlux tech people don't want you using a
product they dont manufacture Instead you should  use 333 @ 23/qt. An
opinion from a pro would have weight, the opinion of Interlux is is
suspect.  Where we have used Brightside which is an excellent product and
added Penetrol a seemingly hard surface has been created.  It's been a
century since Vendors have been troubled by the trurth.

Ok here is more recent experience.

My experience two days ago with Penetrol in Interlux Boot Top was great.
Will do a second coat when the weather allows. (Tomorrow?)

Today added Penetrol to Pettit high build primer with nice results for flow.
But, it extended the dry time about four times normal. The end result is
fine, just painted over with Brightside white without Penetrol (because the
Brightside does so well on its own.)

My can of Boot Top was not at all like normal Brightside. Perhaps because I
have had it for several years (never opened) or because I mixed some
Brightside white in to get the colour I wanted.

Regarding the advice of the manufacturer, AkzoNobel owns Interlux, and Flood
(maker of Penetrol), as well as Cetol and several others.

Be aware that Penetrol forms a skim quickly.
