TWL: Fresh Water Maintenance

I usually try to use up whatever fresh water I have in my tanks monthly.
Get off the shore water and use what's in the tanks. If your tanks are
clean, I'd recommend using Starbrite's water conditioner. It's a powder
that needs to be dissolved in hot water, then added to your tanks. I
think it takes 1/4 tsp. or so for 50 gallons. If your tanks are clean,
this should make the water stay fresh a long time.

If you haven't clean the tanks with bleach, you should do so to make
sure they are very clean, and nothing yukky is growing in there! I use
one gallon of cheap bleach (none of the fancy scented Clorox versions)
per 50 gallons of water. Pour the bleach in the tank, and fill with
water. Run this through all of your faucets, etc until you can smell the
bleach solution. Leave this in the system for 3-6 hrs., then pump it all
out. Refill the tank and run out a couple more times until you've gotten
rid of all the traces of bleach. I do this once a year to keep the
system spotless. Oh yea, be sure to remove any strainers on the faucets
while doing this. You'll probably get a bunch of crud out the first time
you do it.

If your tanks are clean,
this should make the water stay fresh a long time.

I didn't know about the Starbrite stuff -  I use bleach (one capful
per 10 gallons). Additionally  over winter (I live north of 45) I
empty tank and add about one liter or so  of pure alcohol, slosh it
around and pump until it just comes out of the faucets. The rest gets
pumped out in spring and tank flushed with clear water once or twice.
Some people have told me to use Vodka for this "winterizing"  and
have a party with it during spring commissioning.  <grin>

If you haven't clean the tanks with bleach, you should do so

The use of Chlorine Bleach to clean water tanks is known to attack the

welds of SS tanks - which in tanks of Taiwan origin , like mine on Mrs.
Hudson , are known to be weak enough as it is ...( see recent discussion on
repairs thereof ! )

The use of Iodine instead is recommended as has been discussed before -

consult the archives -

Make up a strong solution of about 1/3 or 1/4 the capacity of the water

tank  - load it into the empty tank and go for a ride to slosh it about the
tank - then run it through the faucets etc ... - empty and rinse  the tank
well .

Off the shelf Tincture of Iodine is about 2 % - use about 20 to 30

drops per gal.

Lugol's (Aqueous) Solution ( if available - depending on your relationship
with your pharmacist, physician or dentist  )  is about 5 %  - use about  10
to 15 drops per gal .

( Note 20 drops  equal 1 cc  - it is easier to use a calibrated syringe or
some other measure of cc's  rather than count drops )

Tincture of Iodine ( the 2 % stuff ) is used in a weaker solution for

the purification of drinking when necessary at about  5 to 10 drops per gal
and is effective after standing for about 15 minutes - but it is not advised
to drink the stuff if not necessary ....

There should be no aftertaste at all after rinsing and refilling the
water tank - except the taste of your normal water supply ..

All the Best
