Subject: [Song-Yuan Listserv] CFP-AAS panel on Scientific/Engineering/Medical Contributions by Muslims to Yuan China
Dear Song-Yuan colleagues,
Please find below a call for papers for the upcoming AAS conference.
Although I am presently focusing on Muslim scientific contributions to
Mongol/Yuan China, I would also be interested in including any similar
contributions by other foreigners during this period.
CFP-AAS panel on Scientific/Engineering/Medical Contributions by
Muslims to Yuan China
During the Mongol Yuan period hundreds of thousands of primarily
Muslims from Central Asia and the Middle East were both recruited and
forcibly relocated to Mongolia and China by the Mongols. Most of those
relocated were skilled craftsmen and artisans, while those who were
recruited were experts in their fields, including scientists,
physicians, engineers (hydraulic, military, etc), astronomers,
architects and more. An Islamic Astronomical Bureau was established in
1271, and included an observatory built to meet the specifications of
the Muslim astronomers. A Muslim Medical and Pharmaceutical Bureau was
also established and in order meet the growing demand for translations
into Chinese of Arabic and Persian scientific and medical texts, the
Muslim Imperial College was established to translate texts as well as
teach Arabic and Persian.
If you are interested in presenting a paper on any aspect of these
contributions please send an abstract and short bio to me by August 4
(armijo@gmail.com). Also, if you know of any other scholars who might
be interested, please forward this message to them as well.
Many thanks,
Jackie Armijo (armijo@gmail.com)
