Being text bases I don't think there is much bandwith used...
Nevertheless, that's the way it works, when you SUBSCRIBE to a buddy's
presence you get a NOTIFY when her status changes... what are you
exactly thinking about?

No AFAIK, because you subscribe to each buddy indiviadually, so the
sip server will generate a NOTIFY request for each subscription.

Notifies are also less both in size (think about the SIP headers for
each NOTIFY) and number, the server acts on a timer practically
throttling the replies, this depends really on how many NOTIFYs are
collected from downstream.
