where can i find some useful tight-quarters large-trawler maneuvering pointers, including
impact on the hydraulics?

You might try Charles T. Low's small treatise "Boat Docking; Close
Quarters maneuvering for Small Craft" as a starter.  I've found that it
has some good info and tips for twin and single screw boats.  Cost is
only about $17.95.  It can be ordered on the internet at
http://www.cybertap.com/ctlow/boatdock/

[I don't have any connection to the author, other than receiving the
book for Christmas.]
