John,

I agree with the 200 mile radius.  Last year's conversation on this
topic didn't determine it so I made my own tests.  My local area is New York
City and perhaps since that is a particularly large local area, I find on some
days I can receive local programming as far as 250 miles.  For example, Newark
on the Erie Canal is right on the edge and works about half the time.
Individual local channels seem to have different distances on different days
also.  So at Newark, I might receive channels 9 and up but not 7 and below.
What is your experience with telling DirecTV about your changed locations?
Can you call them once a week and have them move the locals for you as you
progress along your route?

I have this great fear of attempting such a
thing with DirecTV's Philipino non-english-speaking phone support people ...
what was your experience with this?

( I find it amusing how many
non-english-speaking spanish folks search on google for "Canal 44 Videos"
which means in spanish "TV Channel 44 Videos" and they wind up on my Tug 44
Erie Canal website looking at my tugboat videos!  My site has become quite
popular among the illegal mexicans, it appears.)

Best wishes,

Fred W.

The key is to call DIRECTV and change your "Service
Address" to the marina
you are at.  They don't care if you are a boat, RV
etc.  The change will
take place while you are on the phone and DIRECTV will
usually ask what
county you are in so make sure that you have that. Note
that this DOES NOT
include National Feeds but only local channels.

In
addition, check out direct TV's website as some local channels require 2
dishes (i.e. Chattanooga, TN.). Keep in mind that the local TV range is
approximately 200 miles from the city location.

My experience has been good.  I call them, request a service address change,
give them the new address (probably a local marina), they sometimes ask for
the county.  I also give them my cell phone # and tell them that I do not
have a land line.  I keep them on the phone until I see the local channels
on my set.

As to weekly calls I don't know if this is a problem but I would think not.
However, we go so slow (3 yrs on the Loop from Texas and we are just leaving
the Tennessee for Lake Michigan.  BTW, we are "Backward Loopers".
If we are traveling and I don't have a signal I don't call to get signals
for a night or 2.  I usually wait until we are going to be cruising in a 200
+- mile area.
