I am completing changing my battery banks on my Trawler. House bank is
now Golf cart batteries charged by HO alternator from one engine.
The starting batteries are two Optima size 31 batteries ( see
http://www.optimabatteries.com/products/starter/technical.asp ) - they
are rated at 750 CCA - 0 deg, 980 MCA 32 deg and weight 37 pounds. Being
sealed they do not need a battery box, , just strap them down. I will
have them in parallel giving tons of starting power. The will charge
from the OEM alternator on one engine and I have put in a small ( 15 amp
max ) smart charger to top them off from the gen or shore power if
necessary.
If you look into the Optima's, note that they make the same starting
battery in different terminal configurations, single terminal, reversed
terminals, side terminals and marine terminals. Prices differ and
warranty terms differ, but the guts inside are the same. I went with
the "red top" single terminal batter because its the lowest cost and I
did not need any special terminal configuration. I then use the Mil-spec
type battery terminal that lets you easily add 1-4 cables to the terminal.

One thing I would add is to always cover your batteries/terminals-that
dropped tool can short across the terminals resulting in a BIG spark.
