TWL: Transducer Installation

I'm installing upper helm instrumentation including a depth sounder this
week (Humminbird 600). I remember reading an archived thread some months
ago in which it was suggested that a piece of PVC pipe be glued to the hull
to create a dam in which the transducer would float in a pool of mineral
oil. I haven't been able to re-locate that thread, so would like to check
my "facts".

Is that really all there is to it? The transducer simply floats without
being secured in any way? Is the pipe capped to prevent the mineral oil
from possibly sloshing out, or just left long enough to contain the oil in
the event of turbulence? 6"?

I once owned a Hinterhoeller (sail) that had a PVC pipe (6" long,
2"diameter) epoxied to the hull and the transducer sitting in it in a
bath of mineral oil - no cap provided, never leaked. Worked like a
charm. Now on a different boat I have a transducer glued to the
inside of the hull (at a reasonably flat area) with GE Silicone and
it works just as well.
