My Email Account Was Hacked
Two days ago, we returned from a two month trip in a motor home from Florida
to New England, the Canadian Maritime Provinces, and then meandered home. It
was the trip of a lifetime and we were able to see many family and long time
friends. We never went to the United Kingdom! The first day home, the phone
started ringing with calls about the email we allegedly sent out. Of course,
it was a hoax. Our Gmail account was hacked into and a phony letter requesting
$2,500 went out to every email address in our computer. Unfortunately, we used
a campground in North Carolina that had free, unsecured WiFi, and that is
where the perpetrators most likely hacked into our account. I now cannot
access my own Gmail account for security reasons. We have also deleted our
signature information as that seemed to have exacerbated the problem.
Neither the syntax, grammar, nor spelling was customary for us. However,
several friends called with serious concerns about our safety. No one sent any
money, because knowing us, we would have asked for a lot more! Most of the
calls we have received have given us the opportunity to share a good laugh
with you over this obvious scam.
This is just another example of how the internet and web communications can
be wonderful for helping us stay in touch, while also placing us at risk for
security flaws. This time it was not serious, or at least we hope no financial
identities were stolen, but we will be more careful about using public access
WiFi in the future. We apologize for any unneeded worry this may have caused
you and for our inability to respond to your calls and emails personally.
Please know we are well and at home in Ocala, although tired after traveling
nearly 6,000 miles.
Thank you for your care and concern,
Martin & Margaret
