My 25 year old MDJE may have bitten the bullet permanently. I pulled the
generator portion completely apart and I'm heading to the local ONAN service
center tomorrow with the pieces parts to find out which, stator, rotor,
exciter, etc is the culprit. The field breaker kept blowing and I replaced
it hoping the problem was simple--it wasn't. The diesel runs great.
Does anyone know of where I might find a good used MDJE back end at a
reasonable price?
Also, I'm looking at BMZ's 8KW generator repleat with stainless steel
elbows, manifolds, for $6200 and Northern Lights, but the Northern Lights
website is a joke--can't even get complete specs on their 8kw unit.
I won't buy another ONAN because their parts costs are approaching Volvo
Penta. Any genset preferences you'd like to share?

I replaced my MDJE with an Onan 8.0 KW 5 years ago and several of my
friends have done the same thing. You might want to check with anyone that
installs new generators (like Generator Dealers) and see if anyone is
swapping one out. The old MDJEs are difficult to give away because of the
vibration and its associated problems.
I would make some calls up and down the coast but I bet you can find one.

Phil,
It's interesting that you are considering the BMZ about which I know
nothing. However, I looked them up on the Internet and found out that they
are being acquire by another Texas firm which markets auxiliary diesel
generators to truck drivers who have sleeper units. BMZ had been EENT's
supplier. I have no idea how this might affect future service and support,
It's pretty clear that they must make a good product.
"EENT (www.eent.net ), headquartered in Plano, Texas, develops and markets
auxiliary power generators for the long haul trucking industry. The
Company's common stock is traded on the OTC Bulletin Board under the symbol
"EENT".
The Company's flagship product, the AXP 1000, is an idle-reduction
technology device, designed for new and retrofit installation on semi truck
tractors, that provides power generation without requiring the operation of
the truck's engine. Powered by an EPA-approved and CARB-certified engine,
the AXP 1000 maintains the truck's battery power while delivering
electricity for air conditioning, heating, and the operation of televisions,
appliances and other devices, to the sleeper cab, thereby reducing fuel
consumption, air/noise pollution and long-term truck maintenance costs.
(Instead of the 10-15 gallons of diesel fuel consumed through idling each
day, the AXP 1000 consumes approximately 1 gallon of diesel fuel in an
equivalent amount of time)."
Something to ponder,

I'm pleased with the smaller Phasor that we have. While I know nothing about
the 6-12 KW range, I have found the parts for our 4 to be what I think are
very reasonable and in the case of engine parts available from local Kubota
tractor dealers.

No connection or financial interest except when buying parts.

We replaced the Onan MDJE 7.5 KW with an Northern Light 5.5KW gen set
several years ago. I could not be happier, of the countless improvements we
have made to the boat over the last nine years this has been the best.
