Re: T&T: Eastern seaboard Charts on CD's

Hi Furman,

I'm not aware of anyone selling e-charts on CD anymore ... and I'll
use a personal example to try and explain why:

Diana and I used to sell the charts on CDs but that was when we sold
individual US cruising regions for $12.95 a CD.

Turns out people wanted more than one region so ordered multiple
CDs ... more effort and more dollars.

Lots of charts simply won't fit on CD efficiently. As an example, for
the US nine crusing regions we had 12 CDs!

So, now all we sell is a 2-DVD box set of all 3000 raster and vector
charts from NOAA and the USACE ... plus about 200 nautical
publications in searchable PDF format.

Even this is getting difficult to get on just two DVDs! It comes to
almost 8 GB!

Not a sales pitch ... just the facts on the size of all of this neat
digital stuff.

Anyway, as Chuck & Susan suggest you can figure out which individual
charts matter to you (there will be hundreds) and download them from
NOAA or the USACE and then copy them onto your own CDs. Or you can buy
them from a NOAA Certified Distributor on DVD and copy what you want
(at the office or a friends computer) onto CDs for use on the computer
without a DVD drive. Or you can transfer them across a network to the
DVD-drive-less laptop ...

Probably more than a few ways to skin that cat, eh?    [smile]

I hope this helped,

Mark

Checked with Maptech and the only charts they have for the eastern
seaboard
(Norfolk to the keys) is on DVD's.  I have heard of a source to get
them on
CD's.  Does anyone know where they can be obtained?

Everyone knows you can download US charts from NOAA.  But the user-
interface was a little "user-antagonistic" and made it a little tough
to download many charts.

One thing that isn't well known for some reason is that they have a
secondary site for downloading charts in bulk.  Its user interface is
really pretty good.  You can download every chart in one file, or
download regions, or download all charts from particular sites.

Raster charts are here:
http://www.charts.noaa.gov/RNCs/RNCs.shtml

ENC/vector charts are here:
http://www.charts.noaa.gov/ENCs/ENCs.shtml

Note that they keep the files pretty up-to-date.  If you're looking to
update your charts, that site is a pretty painless way to do it.

They also have a new beta interface for getting the data over maps.
It's getting pretty good too.  Check that out here:

Raster charts:
http://www.charts.noaa.gov/InteractiveCatalog/nrnc.shtml

ENC/vector charts:
http://www.charts.noaa.gov/InteractiveCatalog/nenc.shtml

Download by state:
http://www.charts.noaa.gov/InteractiveCatalog/nstate.shtml

Download by region:
http://www.charts.noaa.gov/InteractiveCatalog/ncgd.shtml

When I went to your website, below, my Avast! anti-virus software that your
site was try to download a malware file to my computer (unlikely.) Avast!
also mentioned something about frames and I followed their advice and
aborted the connection.

Could you reassure us that your website is free from malware?

Thank you,

Hi Ron,

I think you're getting "spoofed" here. Please check your Internet
Service Provider (ISP), server connection, and browser.

Dreamhost is one of the most reputable service providers out there and
our secure server is hosted with them.

They have extraordinary levels of security in their Los Angeles server
ranch (the "bunker") and we add layers to that on our personal machines.

Wind to your back,

Mark
