Highlights of reports received March 19 through March 26 from the
Niagara Frontier Region include AMER. WHITE PELICAN, ROSS'S GOOSE,
EURASIAN WIGEON, BLACK VULTURE, DICKCISSEL and SANDHILL CRANE.
From Chautauqua County, March 25, two AMER. WHITE PELICANS on Lake
Chautauqua in the Town of North Harmony. March 25 on the lake at
Vukote Road, off Route 394 west of Jamestown, and March 26 at the
Ashville Bay Marina, further west on Route 394.
March 22, a ROSS'S GOOSE in the Tonawanda Wildlife Management Area
at Sprout Marsh, viewed the Lewiston Road Overlook. At least 23
waterfowl species in the Tonawanda Area and Iroquois Refuge this week
included BLUE-WINGED TEAL, reported only along the trail between
Klossen and Cinnamon Marshes, east of Meadville Road. Also along the
trail, subadult BALD EAGLE and 300 AMERICAN WIGEONS.
Rare EURASIAN WIGEONS at two locations - one back on March 17 at
Windmill Marsh on Albion Road in the Oak Orchard Wildlife Management
Area, and another EURASIAN WIGEON March 21 to 23 in the Genesee County
Town of Alexander, on Old Creek Road, 200 yards south of Peaviner Road.
March 23, the second BLACK VULTURE of the season at the alternate
site for the Hamburg Hawkwatch - the Rogers Road ball fields. The
watch welcomes visitors to Lakeside Memorial or Rogers Road sites,
depending on wind conditions.
A wintering DICKCISSEL continues in a Town of Clarence yard; still
present on March 22.
In Buffalo, March 22, 6 SANDHILL CRANES over Delaware Park, and in
Amherst, on the 25th, a single SANDHILL CRANE high over North Bailey
Avenue.
March 25, GREAT EGRET returned to Beaver Island State Park on Grand
Island. EASTERN PHOEBE March 24 on Grand Island and several other
locations during the week. FOX SPARROW, March 24 and 26 at Tifft
Nature Preserve in Buffalo. And March 20, several EASTERN BLUEBIRDS
and BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS arrived at Beaver Island.
On Lake Ontario, March 22, 301 RED-NECKED GREBES, many in breeding
plumage, at six stops along the lakeshore. Also, SNOW GOOSE, 5
CACKLING GEESE, 2 BLACK SCOTERS, 50 RED-
THROATED LOONS and several hundred HORNED GREBES. At Dunkirk Harbor
this week, 3 RED-NECKED GREBES and 5 BONAPARTE'S GULLS.
Other reports this week - unexpected ICELAND GULL on Hutton Road in
the Town of Oakfield. Two PEREGRINE FALCONS at the Winspear Avenue
chimney on the UB Main Street Campus. PILEATED WOODPECKER in a Silver
Creek yard. COMMON RAVEN over the Town of Holland. In Amherst, 25
WHITE-W. CROSSBILLS in an Eggertsville yard, and PINE SISKINS still at
many feeders.
