Hi Bob:

There weren't very many Prairie 46's built, only 8, and we have number 8.
There are a lot of 44's and Atlantic 44s which are the same boat.  The
molds were bought by Atlantic and they created the Atlantic 47 on the 46
mold and built a couple hundred of them, but they are not trawlers -
they're motor yachts.  We've had our boat out in some pretty tough weather
(not by choice) actually in worse weather than we care to think about and
the boat was terrific!  It's a Jack Hargrave design of Hatteras fame with a
little twist.  The forward third of the bottom is round bilged and then
goes into the typical Hatteras deep V to the stern and has a large keel
about 8" below the 26" props.  Power is a pair of 200hp Perkins which are
being replaced by 210hp Cummins.  No problem cruising 9 - 91/2 knots with a
fuel burn of about 3.5 gals/hr, both engines at 1450rpm.
According to the hp curve we are using less than 100hp per engine.
Previous to this we owned a Bristol Offshore 42 for 22 years and 8,000
happy cruising hours.  Great boat but had a lot more movement than a
Prairie.  I'm a professional captain and have skippered a few trawlers and
I'm very happy with my Prairie.  It compares favorably with any boat I've
been on and even surpassed many.  If you are really interested in the boat,
they do appear on the market from time to time.  One cockpit model just
sold a couple of weeks ago.  Their asking price is usually around $180,000.
We made a great buy and bought for a lot less.  Fantastic interior -
master stateroom is approximately 16'x15' plus tub and shower! Cedar lined
closets and all paneling is backed with Formica to eliminate water
absorption and warping.  It's very expensive construction and in
conversation with the former owner of the company, he revealed he never
made a profit on any of his boats.  If you are serious about the boat let
me know and I'll keep my eyes open in Southern Florida and check my
website, it will show you more about the boat.

Hope you find your dream boat - we found ours.
