I will be putting a TV antenna on my boat in the next week or two. I
have looked at Shakespeare and Glomex. Do any on the list have any
recommendations/cautions for either of these two brands? The unit will
be the unidirectional type and will be mounted at or near the top of the
mast on my Nordhavn 35. Should it be the powered or un-powered type? Any
thoughts, ideas and/or experiences will be appreciated. The TV we have
on board does have a digital tuner.
Thanks in advance,

I have the Shakespeare antenna (round; about 100$ from Defender).
From Easton Md I pick up the Baltimore stations very clearly.
Seems to work well; no monthly bill.

Paul,
We installed our Dantronics "UFO" style amplified antenna about 10 years ago
(now $150 in the Defender catalog). Works great for both TV (digital and
analog, there's no difference for antennas), and FM radio. Runs on 12v
(about 0.1 amp), and is mounted at the top of our 34' mast. Lower mounting
will give shorter range in some places. Shakespeare "Seawatch" and Glomex
sell a very similar looking model.

I have the glomex on my arch. It's powered. Works quite well for HD and SD
broadcasts. I think the powered antennae work better than the passive types.

When Powerboat Reports was still around, they tested all the marine
omnidirectional TV antennas and the Naval brand came out on top. It's
amplified. I've been using one for 8 years or so and have been very happy
with it.

I called Shakespeare tech support and discussed our arrangement. I ended up
with their larger antenna without booster. I generally seem to get better
reception than the other boats.
