Hi all,
today https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1449791 finally
landed on Mozilla Central. This bug removed the overlay loader from
Mozilla code.
Effect on Thunderbird Daily: None at all since we were well prepared.
Special thanks to Richard Marti who tirelessly removed overlay after
overlay from Comm Central until they were all gone(*). He did 99.97% of
the work in "Swiss quality" himself with a little assistance from Aceman
and myself. Richard had to juggle huge patches. Great job, Richard!!
Note that Calendar which still uses XUL overlays broke earlier when
non-restartless add-ons were discontinued by M-C. Geoff Lankow and
Philipp are working on re-establishing a solution that will allow XUL
add-ons incl. Calendar to function again. It is yet to be decided what
TB's plan for add-ons will be at the next ESR which will be TB 68 ESR.
Most likely it will be a mix of WebExtensions and restartless add-ons in
some new yet-to-be-defined shape.
Jörg.
(*) There are some overlays left in mailnews/ which are solely used by
SeaMonkey. Sadly SeaMonkey had no manpower to prepare for today with
many overlays left, so I assume that it's completely malfunctioning as
of today.
Thank you, Richard! Very much appreciated. Particularly given that you do all this as volunteer work!
Same thanks goes to the other good souls that also tirelessly work under the hood as volunteers.
