Steve:
Your 4.5 to 5 gph per engine at 9 to 9.5 knots sounds about right. However,
here's what the Krogen web site says:
For those looking to extend their horizons, the Krogen 49' Express Yacht can
be operated at displacement speeds, thereby increasing her range. At 8 knots
she is using only 3.5 gallons per hour (including an allowance of 1 gallon per
hour for the genset).
The implication is that she uses 3.5gph total minus 1gph for a total fuel burn
of 2.5 gph at 8 knots. I find that a bit hard to swallow.
I remember an uncle I had who back in the early 50's was very proud of his
brand new Ford. Uncle Bill not only didn't have to add oil between changes,
he actually had to periodically drain oil out of this wonderful car since it
actually "made" oil Of course, if this were true it would have indicated
something like a leaky fuel pump diaphragm, but the truth is it was simply a
"man lie". Sort of like our 55 year old blond neighbor lady who "Doesn't put
a thing on her hair". That's a "girl lie".
Oh well, as long as people don't believe everything they read.
By the way, next time you find your pocket overflowing with a couple of extra
"boat bucks" think about putting in a Flow Scan fuel flow indicator. I love
mine, especially since it's hooked to the GPS and can read either gph or mpg.

Bob,
Thank you for your review and comment about your boat. Your web site does a
fine job of showing the boat.
Yes, your boat is much different to our Krogen Express. Our fuel usage with
twin Cat 3116's varies due to our cruising speeds. Most of the time, though,
we are at 9-91/2 knots and find that our fuel use is about 4.5-5 gph per
engine. We use a Tank Tender to measure fuel used by the inch and have found
that this is about where we end up. Obviously, at higher speeds more goes
through the engines. The Krogen is narrow relative to it's length in today's
semi-displacement cruiser. We have found this to be to our benefit cruising
the ICW along with our draft. And, with the extra leg room throughout the
boat, we have spent 5-6 months at a time on her without much problem.
Hope to see you on the waterway,
Steve

That fuel burn rate is about right for my Krogen 42, running at around 7
knots with a Lehman 135. I use about 25 gallons in 10 hours or so, even
if I run the genset for 2-3 of those.

Bob and the List,
I can't speak for the Krogen Express but I can for my Krogen WhaleBack.
On our trip from California to Florida we ran our Cat 3208 NA at @
1,800 RPM this gave us a speed of 7.5 to 8.0 knots depending on load
and sea conditions. Our fuel consumption exclusive of generator was 2.8
to 3.0 gallons per hour for the trip. at higher RPM we of course burn
more fuel.
I agree that FloScans are an excellent device. You can really correlate
your RPM and fuel consumption when you can watch the meter as you go.
Ours is reasonably accurate but I always check the sight gauges on the
fuel tanks to be sure.

Swallow it. With my Prarie at 8 kts my fuel burn is a little over 3 gph. I
did it with the Perkins 200's and I get the same burn with my Cummins 220's
at 1400 RPM.
PS I have 4 passes to the boat Show That I won't be able to use. These are
good any day including Prime Time Thursday..

Do you mean 3 gph total or 3 gph per side?
How do you measure your fuel flow?

Thats total Bob. I top off here and then I top off in Nassau, 19 hour run
at 8 KTS. Have done it over 20 times with a variation of 5 gallons.
Probably current or wind.
