Urgent: Help Needed Today

JS

Wednesday night racers,

I need help today to remove Mark E from the river.  What's needed is two
people to push the old mooring cow across the river, retrieve the mark, and
place it with the other marks at the south end of the break wall.

April Elsasser and I removed B yesterday morning, but the wind became too
strong, making it unsafe to retrieve E.

I have other commitments today, and cannot devote the time.  Also, the tin
boats and mooring cow need to be removed soon.

I would appreciate the help.

Besides, today will be a sunny, calm day on the river!

John

For the record, Mark E was retrieved and placed on the bulkhead by the mooring committee with a hand from Kieran Quinn.

Ben Kono also was there.

Also the mark was really badly wrapped. So much so that the chain was knotted and I doubt there was much chain between the anchor and float that wasn’t wrapped. We had to untangle it and then dip it all back in the river to get the mud off. You might want to try setting these small mushrooms if you don’t already do that, this wrap looked like there wasn’t much stem below the surface and considering how short they are, if it was possible to set them, they should be fine. I know it’s hard with markers, we had trouble this year with ATONs moving around with unset mushrooms. I can describe a method off-line.

Having Kieran along was important, we need the 4th hand, Kieran thanks again.

All,

Thank you for help on Sunday.

Next year we will set them.  This year we simply dropped them in.

I also wonder about placement of the swivel.  I think the chain is 40 feet
long, with a swivel in the middle.  I think the swivel does nothing, since
it's always in the mud.  Perhaps the swivels should be moved to just below
the mark.

Let's discuss before we drop them next time.

Again, your help is much appreciated.

I haven’t studied the practice of rigging racing marks, so this is off the cuff, but I can’t imagine a swivel doing much on a mark. Any chain rotation can be released at the mark by the mark simply spinning. Swivels are to prevent twisting up pendants, and when your boat spins around the buoy, if it gets wrapped around the buoy, the swivel at the top will release the twist when current picks up again. Without a buoy in the water it releases the twist created in the chain and pendants preventing accumulating all that twist up and down the chain. On a mark I would think twist is irrelevant since the mark itself can rotate, there is no keel keeping it pointed into the current. I bet it doesn’t hurt to have one, it’s another point to release twist, but it shouldn’t matter much where you put it. In the middle will allow it release accumulated chain twist, if any, before it gets translated to the anchor, being in the mud should not prevent it from untwisting. But since the twist is more likely due to the rotation, and there is no keel keeping the mark pointed into the current, the middle might be a better location for marks, if again they do anything.

With boats we we have conjectured that the the top swivel is more important, release the twist energy sooner, don’t translated it all the way down the chain, though thinking about it, I will add a bottom swivel to my rig at some point soon. Both seem to be important. There’s the boat spin and then the pulling the chain in a circle potentially creating twist. Just thinking out loud here.

Racing marks wrapping is due to the mark rotating around the anchor point, and given how light the chain is the whole length is pulled each direction, around and around. Setting the mushrooms should give it a little less stem to wrap around, it will not make the problem go away, but should reduce it.

All,

Thank you for help on Sunday.

Next year we will set them.  This year we simply dropped them in.

I also wonder about placement of the swivel.  I think the chain is 40 feet long, with a swivel in the middle.  I think the swivel does nothing, since it's always in the mud.  Perhaps the swivels should be moved to just below the mark.

Let's discuss before we drop them next time.

Again, your help is much appreciated.

For the record, Mark E was retrieved and placed on the bulkhead by the mooring committee with a hand from Kieran Quinn.

Best,

Wednesday night racers,

I need help today to remove Mark E from the river.  What's needed is two people to push the old mooring cow across the river, retrieve the mark, and place it with the other marks at the south end of the break wall.

April Elsasser and I removed B yesterday morning, but the wind became too strong, making it unsafe to retrieve E.

I have other commitments today, and cannot devote the time.  Also, the tin boats and mooring cow need to be removed soon.

I would appreciate the help.

Besides, today will be a sunny, calm day on the river!
