All hands--

I'm pleased to announce that Alan Wagner succeeds John Ford as List
Administrator for Passagemaking Under Power List.

Much thanks to John for his work on PUP over the years. John promises
not to leave boating but has other priorities in his life right now.
John succeeded the first listmaster, Scott Bulger, who now is boatless
but still kicking around.

Alan has been on PUP since the beginning. If the name rings a bell,
it's because his 53-foot aluminum passagemaker-to-be was almost
destroyed in a fire at Yachtsmiths International near Halifax:

Happily, Passage of Time is again taking shape nicely, Alan reports in
an email:

"If YachtSmiths had hurried, they may have been able to get it
finished by December, but by then it would be getting too cold up
there in Halifax for sea trials and the final build out of paravanes,
booms and the like, so we decided to just go slow and make sure that
it is done right.  I have waited this long, so what the heck? What
would I have done with a trawler in Halifax in January anyway?  The
plan now is for a late May launch.  The hull has been painted a deep
mahogany red and the superstructure is a very very light blue (I think
it actually called Ice Blue).  We bit the bullet and decided to do the
entire decking with a product called Marine Decking.  It is a cork
compound that simulates teak but does not have that plastic feel or
look that some of the other synthetic materials do. The interior is
also shaping up.  The cherry is in place and is being finished.  The
electronics are on their way to the final install.

"We are looking forward to a spring or summer cruise in Nova Scotia.

"We were able to salvage most of the hull from the fire and the fire
actually allowed us to make a few changes to the interior in the
rebuild.  I cant say it was 'worth it,' but it will be a better boat
in the end and we are delighted with what YachtSmiths has done for
us.  When the recent hurricane was headed to Halifax, I remember
thinking, 'OK, we have survived a fire, we might as well tackle a
hurricane!'

"The boats name  -- Passage of Time -- comes from an old James Taylor
song (Secret of Life) that Debbie, my wife, and I both love.  It has
a great line in the lyrics that inspired our selection of the boat name:

The secret of life is enjoying the passage of time.
Any fool can do it, there ain't nothing to it.
Nobody knows how we got to the top of the hill.
But since we're on our way down, we might as well enjoy the ride.

"We plan on enjoying Passage of Time as we cruise wherever she takes
us.

Great song, great name!

But, now, it's time for full disclosure: Alan is a practicing lawyer.
He's the president and managing partner of Wagner, Vaughan &
McLaughlin in Tampa, Florida.

"We represent plaintiffs only in injury, maritime, admiralty, and
professional negligence claims.  I am one of those dreaded 'trial
lawyers' that no one wants to ever meet--especially professionally,"
Alan writes, no doubt with a grin.

One other thing: Morning Delight, the Gulfstar 44 that Alan has owned
for eight years -- and which he credits for creating the urge to see
the world at nine knots -- is for sale:

Send the URL to anyone looking for a decent coastal cruiser.

All that said, join me in welcoming Alan as the guy who ensures PUP
stays civil and on topic.

From the remote land of Argentina I welcome Alan to the tedious
Administrator job and thank John for his efficient performance. I
follow all the mails being sent by Passagemaking under power which not
only enlights my ignorance but encourage me to prepare long trips from
South America. Best regards, Polo Visini
