My question is: Does BOAT/US now have a premium towing package above
Unlimited Towing? I now have an Unlimited Towing endorsement on my BOAT?US
membership card. Is there now a limit on unlimited?
Today I got in the mail a letter from BOAT?US Insurance Company trying to
sell me a Premium Insurance Policy designed for boats over $100,000. This
letter made no mention of a premium towing service. I looks like they are
trying to sell me a total policy in which I have absolutely no interest in
after having received a ludicrous quote a few months ago when I was shopping.

We carried BoatUS insurance for decades until they raised their rates to
become one of the most expensive insurance carriers for boats. We have found
with a little research that there are really lots of alternatives available
from good companies for a lot less money. We do encourage others to carry
towing insurance in addition since the cost is still relatively low. A
comparison of TowBoatUS and SeaTow policies might help make a choice although
we have not looked at the limitations of each. perhaps someone else might have
that information. Chuck

By going to the Boat US website you can find that there is one level of
towing above unlimited although I'm not sure that it is worth the small
additional charge and coverage.
AL, you do not have to do something "stupid" to run aground and need help.
One can have an equipment failure in a narrow channel. For example, a bronze
or cast iron tillerarm could break. I'm sure others could come up with
different "no-fault" casualties. Although humans usually get themselves in
trouble, they do not plant deadheads in the PNW or crab pot forests on the
East Coast. Sometimes stuff happens. And your job is to sell policies that
get owners out of financial trouble and see to it that they are taken care
of by those insurance companies. Otherwise, we have become an insurance
company support sport. This is like health insurance companies calling
pay-outs "losses."

If TowBoat/US does the towing themselves, there isn't a limit. If
you're towed by another service or if you're out of their area, the
limit is $2,500 ($3,000 for their new unlimited gold offering). In
most cases, a $2,500+ tow will happen because you're out of their
towing area so in reality, there's a $2,500 limit.
I've gotten a number of offline responses to my request about towing
and the effect on your main boat insurance. The results experienced
by most other people are that having a towing claim against your
normal insurance does not increase your premium. So if you have a
$2,500 towing endorsement on your normal boat insurance (having
nothing to do with Boat/US), the only reason to go with the additional
TowBoat/US unlimited policy seems to be to reduce paperwork.
I also have to say that there are a myriad of non-stupid things that
can happen where I would require towing:
Picking up a lobster pot that was below the water surface
Hitting a deadhead below the surface
Completely unforeseen mechanical breakdown
Unforeseen medical emergency
...and on and on.
