That's a shame, I stayed there in 2007 and again Monday night this week. It
is not a fancy place but good to tie up to for a night and the price is
right. Both times we have stayed there we have made the short walk to the
Crows Nest for a meal, not an inexpensive outing. I guess in the future I'll
be anchoring off the ICW with dinner onboard.
Before we left there yesterday morning a tree removal crew came in they
told me they were to take out the pine trees along the dock the were also
cutting the mangroves way back.

definitely not free but very nice
Send the Crow's Nest restaurant a note telling them you will miss
dinner at their place but with the loss of free docking you have elected
to stay away. Ditto for all the other business that might have had
customers from the boaters using the free dock. Pretty soon they will get
the message. The more messages the better.
chase away the boaters and business will decline.

Unfortunately, I doubt that will have much impact in a situation like this.
These folks are operating on the premise that they would rather try and get
every dollar, rather than loose a few pennies.
Florida, as a whole, is not boater friendly, instead they are money friendly.
In fact, most places in Florida would prefer that you just send them the money
and stay away. If you could direct deposit, that would please them even more.

Venice is also the town that is notorious for the cop that sits in the middle of the intercoastal, closely watching for any misdeed that you do as you travel through, especially not having your boat registered in a state somewhere.
Even if unaware of this requirement and willing to stop and rectify it, the fella writes you a ticket and assigns a court date. Now you have to jump through all those hoops.
With the free dock now disappearing, they are now in a position, if you have to stay, to be able to force you to have to pay for a dock for as long as it takes to rectify the problem.
In spite of how cruiser unfriendly the rest of Florida seems to be, Venice seems to lead the pack.

Rudy,
May I suggest that when a problem like this (Venice free parking) comes up,
someone get the email address of the Venice mayor, post it and then, whenever
anyone has somthing to say about it, you "c.c." the mayor so he/she can see
the comments. The email from Arild is right on about the restaurant but the
right people aren't seeing what is being said.
Chill factor of -12C today - not going far!!

Jim, I think that your idea is the better way. Besides, if we are going to whine about it, we should first do something productive that then allows us the right to whine.
Last night the chill factor here was around 37F, but it feels like -12 so we can empathize with you guys... but we empathize with less clothes on.
