After reading Milt Baker's post about being boarded and robbed, I thought
about the issue of having confidential information on the laptops
compromised. In addition to all the other things we do when online, such as
deleting temporary files, deleting history and cookies, keeping up with anti
virus, ad-ware and other issues - one should think about encrypting the data
on the laptops. Most major companies require encryption on the deployed
laptops to ensure nothing is compromised if the laptop is lost or stolen.
Many news stories of late with employees having too much sensitive data on
their work laptops and they are lost or stolen and creating a very
embarrassing and perhaps a legal liability situation for the company or
government agency.
I use this software and is one more userid and login when you boot the
machine up - other than that, you don't really notice and derogation of
performance. Google laptop encryption - there are a number of packages
available.
