Dissertations

How can I find out what new dissertations have been completed about the
Song period? A list of new journal articles would be nice also. But the
latter may require more work than the thin staff can handle.

Hi, Mike,

Greetings from Taiwan. Saw your question on the Listserv. One place you can
at least begin to search for dissertations on topics related to the Song
(or anything else related to China) is the On-line Catalog of the National
Central Library in Taiwan. You can access it (in Chinese or English) here:

http://enwww.ncl.edu.tw/

As far as I can tell, the NCL has most or all USA doctoral dissertations on
China through 2014.  "Author name" and "dissertation title" searches work
well. You can also do "topical" searches.

As for dissertations and master theses in Taiwan and the Mainland, there
are convenient databases available on line, many of which allow you to
download PDF versions of the theses or dissertations.  For instance, this
one (which is free) is for theses and dissertations done in Taiwan:

http://ndltd.ncl.edu.tw/cgi-bin/gs32/gsweb.cgi/login?o=dwebmge

Most of the databases I know about for Mainland materials are subscription
based and very expensive, so to access them you would probably need to be
working at a Chinese language materials research library with subscriptions.

If you have additional questions, let me know and I will try to help.

Best wishes and good luck,

Dear Colleagues,

Mike raises a good point:  we used to have a section of the journal that described recently completed dissertations.  (I think it depending on people reporting to the editor about the completed theses.)  Worth bringing back?
