Repairs in Mobile

Al and Sue,

Sorry to come across as a cynic, but . . .

One of my important boating life lessons came from the experience of
working in a boatyard some years ago: Don’t leave your boat in a boatyard
with a long, complex or important to-do list and expect to return weeks
later and find everything done to your satisfaction, on time and on
budget.  It may happen occasionally but it doesn’t happen often.  It’s not
the norm!

Go away and leave the repairs and supervision to the “experts” at the yard
and you’re setting yourself up for disappointment.  It’s a hard lesson to
learn, learned most often (and sometimes serially) by less experienced
owners who are hoping against hope that they can trust the boatyard to do
the jobs right.  Caveat emptor: your boatyard is not like your Lexus dealer!

If you MUST leave leave your boat with important work to be done and go
away, tell the yard manager you will call him every morning for a report of
what was accomplished yesterday and what’s on the agenda for today.  Then
follow through daily, asking for pictures by email as each project is
started, progresses, and finished.  Every morning.

Better yet, don’t leave your boat and expect the work to be done right.

At least that’s my $.02 worth.

Thanks to the many of you who responded so quickly. Got some good
recommendations with a large percentage suggesting the same place (Dog
River in Mobile). There were a few other interesting responses for the
Florida panhandle and I'll be following up with them as well.
