I was curious about the status of Atlantic puffins on the Connecticut state bird list. One of the reasons I am asking about puffins is because I received some sad news about a puffin I had "adopted" for Project Puffin. "My" puffin, EN+06, failed to return to Eastern Egg Rock off Maine this summer. EN+06 was a female puffin who would have been 30 years old this year. The first place I look for this kind of information is Connecticut Birds by Zeranski & Baptist, an invaluable reference. There we find: STATUS: an accidental winter vagrant; an immature was hot by a hunter at Penfield Reef, Fairfield on November 19, 1947 (Auk 67:254, BcM No. 1487), and an immature was captured and photographed on November 10, 1968 at East Haven by Mrs. J. Wilkinson (AmB 23:26). Also, Yale Peabody Museum has an alcohol specimen (No. 7740) of a female collected at New Haven on October 7, 1968, by D. Parsons. Connecticut Birds appears to be out of print, I found my copy for sale on-line, but I think I have seen a copy or two around somewhere, perhaps at one our birding stores or being raffled off at the COA annual meeting.
