Laptop Display Night VIsibility

I run a lot at night with The Capn running on a Dell Inspiron 8500 with a 15
inch display.  It is far too bright at night even with the display turned
down.  I don't use night colors because there are parts of The Capn screen that do
not turn to red.  These include the blue bar across the top of the screen and
any similar bar across the top of the charts if you are running a split
screen.  My solution for some time has been to put two layers of dark grey
plexiglas across my screen.  The darker better the better as long as you can see
through it a little bit.  I solvent welded a plexiglas arrangement that slides over
the display.  I taped another piece of plexi to this so that I am looking
through 2 layers.  I then turn the screen down all the way and this works fine.
I run a very dark pilothouse.  If I get to a point where I need to see the
spend a bit more time looking at some chart detail, it is a simple process to
adjust the screen to a slightly brighter setting.  With this arrangement and
generally dark pilothouse, I can see lobster traps while running Long Island Sound
at night.  Admittedly, we don't have anywhere the number of traps that they
do in Maine.

When I first did this I used a single layer of plexi and when it didn't dim
the display enough I went back to the plastics supplier.  I asked for a thicker
piece explaining what I was doing.  He told me that they all let the same
amount of light through and that I needed 2 layers rather than a single thicker
piece.

I have a plexi shield for day use to keep the sun off the display and at
night, that goes away and the other piece slides over the display.  It all works
very well and was easy to make.  Also, it was a very modest cost.  If anyone
wants more details, drop me a line.
